The story of Google's long-rumoured 'Pixie' digital assistant has taken another turn. Earlier this month, Android Authority claimed to have discovered new details about what it described as 'Google's rumoured new...[digital] assistant'.
The report followed claims throughout late 2023 and early 2024 that Google would use the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro (curr. $849 on Amazon) to showcase another new digital assistant. However, Android Authority asserted that Google had rebranded Pixie as 'Pixel Sense' ahead of a full rollout later this year with the Pixel 10 seres.
Now, 9to5Google suggests that these claims were wide of the mark. Apparently, Pixie was spun off into two projects, one of which Google has now shipped as Pixel Screenshots. Meanwhile, the other project could become Pixel Sense to provide Gemini with more features.
In short, Pixel Sense is unlikely to replace Gemini. Instead, 9to5Google expects it to predictively assist Pixel owners with suggestions based on prompts from first-party apps. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether Pixel Sense will be exclusive to the Pixel 10 series at launch, as Pixel Screenshots has proven to be on Google's current Pixel 9 smartphones.
