Nothing has just confirmed the SoC of the Phone (3), the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. While this isn't the true flagship chipset that fans were hoping for, it's a proper step up from the last-gen Phone (2). Of course, the company could've also gone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but as one of the officials noted, the choice of the SoC will bring better software support.
To be specific, in response to users asking why Nothing didn't opt for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Akis Evangelidis, the Co-Founder and Head of Marketing, notes that the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 allows the Phone (3) to promise 5 years of major updates. The upcoming flagship will also get seven years of security patches, both of which are significant upgrades over the predecessor.
In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would've made the Nothing Phone (3) stick with 4 years of major updates and 4 years of security patches. The predecessor, on the other hand, offered 3 years of major updates and 4 years of security patches. So, the upcoming flagship will clearly be the best in Nothing's portfolio when it comes to software support.
Evangelidis also highlights that the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 has a better GPU, NPU, ISP, and connectivity than the 8 Gen 3. Of course, things would've looked even better for the Nothing Phone (3) if it packed the Snapdragon 8 Elite, but at the right price point, the upcoming smartphone could stand as a good upper mid-range pick for many.
