Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 doubles up on the RTX 2080 and is up to 60% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti on CompuBench to give AMD and Big Navi a hard target to hit

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card has been spotted being put through its paces on CompuBench 2.0 Desktop. The Ampere device demolished the RTX 2080 and also put the RTX 2080 Ti to the sword. With a price starting at US$699 for the RTX 3080, Nvidia has thrown down the gauntlet to AMD and its Navi range to counter this challenge.

The new Ampere range of graphics cards from Nvidia has been extremely hyped up as of late, but it appears at least one of the GeForce 30 series parts is going to deliver on the various heady promises that have been made. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 paid a visit to CompuBench, and its results were shared by noted data miner Tum Apisak. In the game effects tests and rendering benchmarks, the GeForce RTX 3080 was able to take apart the Turing-based GeForce RTX 2080 and even managed to soundly defeat the RTX 2080 Ti in every compared test.

For instance, in the Vertex Connection and Merging test the RTX 3080 spotted by Apisak delivered a result of 39.042 mPixels/s (another tested sample recorded 39.128 mPixels/s – higher figure is better) compared to 24.621 mPixels/s (3080 first result: +59%) for the RTX 2080 Ti and 18.555 m/Pixels/s (3080 first result: +110%) for the RTX 2080. In the more straightforward Ocean Surface Simulation test (simulating waves) the new Ampere unit managed 7768.469 Iterations/s, which was over 38% higher than the RTX 2080 Ti and a noteworthy 88% more than the RTX 2080 (see screenshots below). In fact, in the Catmull-Clark Subdivision Level 5 benchmark, the Ampere card was even 60.78% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti.

With a starting price of US$699 and head-turning synthetic benchmark scores to show off in comparison to the Turing series, there’s no denying the GeForce RTX 3080 is looking very impressive at the moment. However, there is a challenger looming on the horizon in the form of AMD and the likely-to-be-labeled Radeon RX 6000 series, and you can be sure that Team Red will try to offer up the price and performance package that has become widely expected from the Santa Clara-based company. The bell should soon be ringing for round one of the “Big Navi” vs. Ampere match-up.
