Specification comparisons between devices such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can end up being meaningless, especially when the expected components offer little difference between the two next-gen consoles. It will be variables such as pricing, exclusive games, third-party developer backing, and individual features that actually matter. But that hasn’t stopped Tidux from making what has now become a somewhat controversial tweet (see below for screenshot) stating that the PS5 has a performance edge over the Xbox Series X.
The post doesn’t contain specific details about the specifications; it rather has a judgment call for the main components. So Tidux believes the PS5 and XSX are equal in terms of the CPU, but the Sony machine is ahead in regard to the SSD and RAM. Apparently, the speed and size of the PS5’s SSD are superior to what the XSX can offer, and the RAM is also faster and has greater bandwidth. The XSX defeats the PS5 with a better GPU, but with less than 1 TFLOP performance difference. These details have led Tidux to claim “Performance PS5 > XSX”.
Unsurprisingly, there has been a very mixed reaction to this data. Many have pointed out that having a much faster and bigger SSD won’t make the PS5 particularly any more impressive than the XSX apart from during loading operations. Also, superior RAM will certainly assist with graphics processing, but then the XSX apparently has the superior GPU, which will appeal to many gamers who crave a console that can produce the best-looking graphics.
Of course, this sort of leak has to be dealt with skeptically, especially as the leaker in this case has been mistaken in the past. Tidux stated that Death Stranding would only be available for the PlayStation 4 and not the PC, but it has already been revealed that 505 Games will be publishing a Windows version of the popular action game by the middle of this year. It’s more than likely when the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X finally hit the shelves gamers will be persuaded mostly by the titles available to them.
