A vetted industry insider has been dishing up some interesting information about the upcoming next-gen consoles. It appears there will be Pro versions of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X after all. Apparently, the base PS5 can boast of 9 teraflops of GPU power, while the Pro model will be closer to the 12 TFLOPS of the Pro variant of the XSX.

It wasn’t too long ago that Microsoft threw down the gauntlet by offering up some details about the Xbox Series X. One of the standout specifications was the 12 TFLOPS of compute performance linked with the next-gen console’s GPU. However, according to a NeoGAF member called VFXVeteran, the XSX console on show was actually the top-end version and that there will be a lower-specced base model. In fact, the alleged industry professional has stated that there will be a base and Pro version of both the XSX and PS5.

In regard to the PS5, it seems the base model will offer decent GPU compute performance at 9 TFLOPS, which means the Pro variant's power will possibly be quite close to the figure Microsoft stated recently for the XSX. The same vetted NeoGAF member also claims that the base and Pro consoles will likely be released at the same time, thus allowing them to enjoy a full life cycle and giving gamers a wider choice come holiday 2020. Rumors about a PS5 Pro have come and gone over the past few months, but this latest news gives some refreshed credibility to the idea that Sony will release two consoles.

Unsurprisingly, Pro variants of the PS5 and XSX would be more expensive than their base counterparts. VFXVeteran has guessed at around US$600 for the top-end models, which would make sense if the base models are going to stay under the US$500-mark. No figure is given for the amount of TFLOPS performance the PS5 Pro will offer users, but many rumors have settled around a figure of 12 TFLOPS, which would mean the next-gen console perfectly matched the rival XSX “Pro” in this specific detail at least.
