New tracker with e-ink display could make AirTag look outdated

The selection of trackers for key rings or wallets on the market is very large. Aura is a new system currently available through a crowdfunding campaign, and it even comes with its own screen. The manufacturer uses an e-ink display, a logical choice that should be particularly useful on a key ring, since electronic ink screens only require power when the image changes. The screen can also show photos, but it can also display an emergency contact or simply a decorative pattern. The Aura tracker could be useful not only on a key ring but also on or inside a suitcase or on a pet collar.
Unsurprisingly, location tracking is handled not via GPS, but through Apple Find My and Google's Find My Device. This means compatible smartphones need to be nearby, which should often be the case. With these networks, location tracking is usually accurate to within a few feet. For the final few feet, or inches when something is stuck between sofa cushions, a speaker helps. Smart alerts are supported, for example if a suitcase is left at the airport or keys are forgotten in a bowl.
The advertised battery life is up to 10 months. The tracker does not use a rechargeable battery but a regular CR2032 cell. That means the Aura does not need to be thrown away after that time. The model meets IP67 requirements, so rain and dust should not be an issue. As part of the crowdfunding campaign, the gadget can currently be reserved for around $40 per unit. Shipping is scheduled for July. The usual financial risks inherent to Kickstarter campaigns apply, especially since this is an unknown manufacturer.
