According to the official documentation, NethSecurity "is an Unified Threat Management (UTM) solution that provides a comprehensive suite of security features, including firewall, content filtering, deep packet inspection (DPI) using Netifyd, Dedalo hotspot, OpenVPN, and an optional remote controller," that's designed to be easy to setup and configure. Thanks to these attributes, this OpenWrt-based Linux distribution is a smart choice for small and medium-sized businesses, but even for enterprise organizations. Yesterday, it received a new update, which is labeled 8.1 and comes with the image version 23.05.3-ns.1.1.0.
In addition to multiple bug fixes that aim to provide enhanced stability, NethSecurity 8.1 also comes with two major features that were previously promised to arrive, namely the connection manager, which adds a connection tracking interface, helping the user to easily manage network traffic, as well as admin user management directly from the user interface. Other changes include a sticky option in MultiWAN rules for connection persistence, improved authentication flexibility for LDAP configurations, including Active Directories, and more.
The major features currently in the pipeline that are expected to arrive in the coming months include firewall objects and reporting. Those new to NethSecurity should check out the installation page for all the details they need to get the job done properly. Also, those looking for a printed (or digital) guide can grab Elijah Baker's Linux Networking 101: Building and Managing a Secure Infrastructure, which is available for free with Kindle Unlimited ($24.99 to buy), but also in paperback ($27.99) and hardcover ($29.99) format.
