NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070: Purported Founders Edition design surfaces bearing similarities with RTX 3080

NVIDIA is on the verge of releasing the GeForce RTX 4090, making it the first Ada Lovelace-based graphics card to reach the market. For context, the company has also introduced the RTX 4080 12 GB and RTX 4080 16 GB, as well as the RTX 6000 Ada Generation. However, Moore's Law Is Dead (MLID) claims to have received information about the GeForce RTX 4070.

Focusing on the Founders Edition model, the leaker asserts that the RTX 4070 will be a two-slot graphics card, which should come as no surprise. Purportedly, the RTX 4070 will be closer in size to the RTX 3080 than the RTX 3070, as the graphic below attempts to demonstrate. Currently, MLID expects NVIDIA to base the RTX 4070 around the AD104, a GPU that the company already uses in the RTX 4080 12 GB.

In other words, the RTX 4070 will be a cut-down RTX 4080 12 GB. Reputedly, NVIDIA is targeting two sets of specifications. Conversely, it may be informing people of conflicting information to determine the sources of leaks. Either way, MLID speculates that NVIDIA will launch the RTX 4070 with 10 GB of GDDR6X VRAM running at 21 Gbps and a 250 W TGP if AMD has not released anything competitive. Alternatively, NVIDIA will uprate the RTX 4070 to 12 GB of the same VRAM and a 285 W TGP if it needs to position the card more aggressively.

MLID adds that we should expect the RTX 4070 to deliver 80% to 85% the performance of theRTX 4080 12 GB. Reportedly, NVIDIA hopes to release the RTX 4070 in Q1 or Q2 2023, leaving remaining RTX 30 stock to fill the void beneath the RTX 4080 series. Allegedly, the RTX 4070 is ready to go though, so there is a chance that the RTX 4070 could launch in Q4 2022 if AMD gives NVIDIA a reason to worry about the upper mid-range segment.
