Murena 2 smartphone with privacy switch raises over US$150,000 on Kickstarter
The Murena 2 Kickstarter campaign kicked off at the beginning of October with the relatively low goal of US$25,000. This has already been well and truly exceeded with the campaign having collected just over US$167,000 from 395 supporters so far, eight days before it ends. Delivery of the smartphone begins in December.
This is probably due not least to the relatively attractive price - as part of the campaign, the Murena 2 only costs US$399, the recommended retail price on the open market is expected to rise to US$499. For this price, buyers get a 6.43-inch 1,080p+ AMOLED display, a 64-megapixel main camera, a 13 MP telephoto camera, a 5 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 25 MP selfie camera.
On the inside is a MediaTek Helio P70 ARM chip, which has four Cortex-A73 performance cores and four Cortex-A53 efficiency cores. The 2019 chip may be a little outdated, but at least it's paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage. A 4,000 mAh battery and a microSD card reader round off the features. The big special feature of the smartphone is the privacy switch on the left side of the frame, which makes it possible to deactivate the cameras and microphones at the hardware level so that malware cannot access them.
The device comes with /e/ OS-based Android and completely dispenses with Google apps, although it is possible to download apps from the Google Play Store. The /e/ Foundation provides its own store that is intended make browsing on Google Play possible without being tracked by Google, but only free apps can be downloaded from this store.
