After Apple announced its innovative AirPower charger and cancelled it after several years of delay, Nothing admits to having experienced a similar failure. Nothing founder Carl Pei talks about the unfinished Nothing Power (1) charger in an insightful video.

In the video embedded below, Nothing founder and CEO Carl Pei talks about Nothing Power (1) for the first time, a charger and power bank combination that never made it to market. A prototype of the device can be seen in the video, which has a similar, transparent look to the Nothing Ear (2).

A large Qi charging coil can be seen on the top, which allows wireless earphones or smartphones to be charged wirelessly. A USB-C port and a USB-A port are found on the back, allowing for a total of three devices to be charged at the same time. A special feature is the integrated battery, meaning that the Nothing Power (1) was devised as a stationary charger as well as a power bank for on the go.

However, Nothing encountered a number of problems during development. The transparent plastic was simply not robust enough to withstand drops, as the integrated battery meant that Nothing Power (1) was significantly heavier than the charging case of completely wireless earphones. The temperature also became a problem when charging via USB cable and wirelessly at the same time.

Apple's AirPower charger was also discontinued for the same reasons. In the years that have passed since scrapping the Power (1), Nothing has indeed brought a charger to market, but the CMF by Nothing Power 65W GaN is far less ambitious.
