Reviews for the Motorola Moto G8 Power

Despite their similar names and large-capacity batteries, there are more differences than similarities between these two phones. The more affordable handset doesn't always come off worse -- if you need two SIMs and MicroSD expansion, then look to the £149.99 G8 Power Lite. But the Lite model's screen is disappointing and the processor is underpowered, and it's noticeably larger and more unwieldy. So if your budget stretches the extra £70, we recommend the £219.99 Moto G8 Power.

The Moto G8 Power is a solid budget phone that performs better than its price would suggest. Motorola has added more cameras, and refined its look to mimic the flourishes of flagship smartphones, including smaller bezels and a punch-hole in the display for the selfie camera. Moto purists may be dismayed by the departure from the line’s signature design, but the phone’s performance, cameras, and extensive battery life should endear it to folks looking for a solid phone at a low cost.

Motorola's market share has been on the up and up here in the US, and its staple G-series of phones was recently enriched with three new budget models - the G8 Power, G8 Power Lite and the G8 itself. Just like the G7 series last year, they differ by battery capacity, among other specs, and come at budget phone prices, carrying big displays with them. Needless to say, the Power models stand for long battery life, as both ship with 5000mAh packs, and we found the new Motos to deliver some record longevity in our benchmark tests indeed. If you are looking for a budget phone with an incredible battery life and a great price, the Moto G8 Power seems to be the way to go.

This is the latest offering from Motorola the Moto g8; it can work using the three buttons at the base of the screen or after a single click in Settings with ‘Gestures’. Unlike a lot of recent phones this still has a 3.5mm socket for headphones or earbuds. It also comes with a clear cover for the back and sides for protection for the odd drop.

Yes, you can go out there and get yourself a phone with a blazing fast processor. Yes, you can get one that costs nearly £1,000 and has a stack of cameras and a whole bucket-full of tricks. But what if you want one that doesn’t cost the Earth and has a really decent battery life?

The G8 Power has a large battery and a nice screen but these are no longer enough to make for a truly compelling smartphone offer. What we miss here is more fluid performance and better camera image quality. In their current implementation, they are not up to the level of the competition in this price range.

If you've got a budget of around £200 then this a great choice, it's good across the board, with an excellent battery, and a good screen. The camera is decent and very versatile, while performance matches that of other phones in the same price bracket.

With a big battery and simple specs, the Moto G8 Power will last for days without breaking a sweat. On the downside it’s not much of a looker, it can get a little sluggish, and while the main camera lens is fine the additional shooters don’t add much. This price point is all about priorities though, so if battery is yours then look no further.

If you're shopping on a budget: the Moto G8 Power is the class-leading affordable phone with an immense battery. It improves upon the G7 in most departments - screen, design, storage - with its only real lackings being no NFC and slow Wi-Fi.

Personally what lets this phone down is the fact you do not get NFC support for contactless payment and at the time of writing this review, we are in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak. Wireless payments have never been more important and this phone not supporting NFC is a big negative in my opinion. However, if you can look past that downfall this phone is a decent mid-range with a good camera and long-life battery being the key reasons you would buy this phone.

While the Moto G8 Power isn’t quite as impressive or affordable as its predecessor, and somewhat eclipsed by the G8 Plus, it’s still well worth considering if battery life is a priority.

The Moto G8 Power is an exciting proposition: while there will be plenty of devices boosting their specs in 2020, this is a phone that focuses on what really matters - battery life.

We haven’t had enough time with the phone to provide you with definitive buying advice, but it certainly looks promising from our initial impressions. The behemoth of a battery will almost certainly be a strong recommending factor, and the screen also looks pleasant too, while the processor should be capable enough of handling typical day-to-day activities without a problem. The camera demands more cautious attention, as I wasn’t completely sold on what I saw at first – but the fact there are more cameras to play around with compared to its predecessor is an encouraging sign. It looks like a capable device, but before you make the decision to buy it’s worth waiting for our upcoming full review with our final verdict.

Model:
One of the biggest problems faced by smartphone users is regarding the battery life. It is undeniable to say that one of the deciding points for any smartphone purchase is its battery longevity. Users obviously crave for the ones which allows maximum productivity with the most minimal recharging need. The Motorola Moto G Power series was intended to bring in better battery power for its smartphones. Having said that, the Moto G7 Power stepped in last year to prove its capability and now, the Moto G8 Power is definitely following behind to prove its worth and power this year.
Known as Moto G8 Power in most countries except in US where the model is known as Moto G Power, this smartphone has incorporated a large 5000mAh battery. This is great news for those dreading the need for frequent recharging of the phone because Motorola claims that with this battery capability, G8 Power can hold the battery for up to three days of usage after fully charged. Apart from that, this model also supports rapid charging at 10 watts. This simply means that even when the phone is finally drained out after usage, it can be recharged way more quickly than other average smartphones out there. So, whichever way it goes, Moto G8 Power is definitely winning hearts in terms of its awesome battery power. Just like the power that it carries in its name, this model proves to be powerful in terms of functionality as well.
In terms of its display, Moto G8 Power has a far more interesting physical presentation than its predecessor. While G7 Power cannot be classified as the most interesting phone to look at, G8 Power has definitely improved its look. The phone rear has a rather subtle patterning to it which looks like a very fine pin stride. This addition to its design helps to lift the phone and adds some character to it. Despite winning hearts with its massive battery capability, such large battery within its built brings slight drawback to the phone with a much thicker and heavier design. However, it doesn’t feel quite overwhelming when being held, which is a plus point.
As far as the camera is concerned, Motorola Moto G8 Power generally comes in with five cameras overall. But one of the important features to be noted is the fact that it has a camera configuration which is integrated with Google lens. This integration allows detailed recognition and information on the object of focus. Such integration is obviously a great step forward for the Power variant of the Moto G series. The Motorola Moto G8 Power comes in two different colors namely Smoke Black and Capri Blue for users to choose from based on their personal taste and preference.

SD 665: Fast mid-range ARM SoC with 8 CPU Kryo 260 cores (four fast 2 GHz Cortex-A73 cores in a cluster and two power saving 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores) and a rather slow Adreno 610 GPU. Manufactured in a 11 nm LPP process.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
6.40":
It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.Motorola: Founded in 1928, the US-based company mainly focuses on communication technology such as smartphones. The original company Motorola Inc was split up in 2011. Motorola Mobility got the smartphone division and was taken over by Google in 2012 and Lenovo in 2014.
The company is known for its cell phones and other electronic devices such as smartwatches, tablets and accessories. Motorola was one of the first companies to produce cell phones, and in recent years has also innovated in the areas of 5G technology and modular smartphones (Moto Mods). Motorola is also active in public safety and professional communications, providing solutions for government agencies, businesses and other organizations. The company has operations in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide.
79%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
