Motorola Edge 70 Max gets more Android updates than suggested, but support remains lackluster

While Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel devices often receive six to seven major operating system updates, update support for Motorola smartphones is far more limited. With the new Motorola Edge 70 Max, Motorola has caused additional confusion, as the fine print states that the smartphone is only supposed to receive two major Android updates and three years of security patches.

In the technical specifications, however, Motorola advertised three OS updates and five years of security patches. Motorola has now addressed this discrepancy with GSMArena and officially confirmed that the premium mid-range smartphone will receive three Android updates and five years of security patches – just like the Motorola Edge 70 ($529 on Amazon). While this support isn’t quite as bad as expected, the Motorola Edge 70 Max will still ship with Android 16, even though Android 17 would already be available.

As a result, the smartphone will only receive updates up to Android 19 – that is, up to the Android version expected to be released in 2028. This means Motorola lags far behind many competitors’ smartphones in terms of update support, and thus remains a poor choice for customers who want to use their smartphone for a long time. That’s a shame, because the Motorola Edge 70 Max offers some very interesting specs, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a 7,000-nit AMOLED display, and a 7,100 mAh battery.
