Minisforum EliteMini UM780 XTX undergoes performance test with RTX 4090
YouTuber TechTablets has put the Minisforum EliteMini UM780 XTX to the test. The model used in the test comes equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 7840S CPU. In its default state, the processor runs at 65W settings, but it’s possible to put it into “Performance Mode” and increase TDP to 70W.
However, TechTablets didn’t bother to get into the BIOS in the test. Instead, the YouTuber tested it in the default 65W mode and paired it with an Nvidia RTX 4090. In this setup, the Minisforum UM780 XTX achieved 32459 points in 3DMark TimeSpy.
To compare, the Nvidia RTX 4090 running on a desktop has an average score of 36291. So, when connected to the Minisforum UM780 XTX, the GPU saw a loss of around 10.5% in performance. And that’s not a bad thing. When GPUs are externally connected to mobile systems through Thunderbolt/USB4, there’s generally a 20% performance loss.
This shows that the Oculink found in the Minisforum EliteMini UM780 XTX is better than standard Thunderbolt/USB4 solutions. However, the performance could’ve been better if the mini PC utilized a desktop-grade processor instead of a mobile Ryzen 7 CPU.
Also, it’s worth noting that the Oculink in the Minisforum UM780 XTS is capable of handling up to 63 Gbps of speeds. That means it’s Gen 4x4. Conversely, the GPU has a PCIe Gen 4x16 connection, which is another thing that’s bottlenecking the RTX 4090 (curr. US$2381.51 on Amazon) in this setup.
