Microsoft releases stable Android 12L update for Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 with new features and improvements
Microsoft has delivered Android 12L for the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2, less than two weeks after the company previewed the OS update. As expected, Microsoft has tweaked Android 12L from the stock version that Google presented in December 2021. With that being said, the version of Android 12L running on the Surface Duo series is much closer to a stock experience than One UI 4.1.1 on the Galaxy Z Fold4.
As Windows Central notes, Microsoft has given Android 12L a flavour of its Fluent design language, although there is no escaping that it still looks more like Android than Windows 11. According to the website, the changelog is rather short for what is a 3.2 GB download. However, @scaryifliteral claims that Microsoft has improved image quality between Android 11 and Android 12, which is a handy, if undocumented, upgrade. Predictably, Microsoft has bundled the October 2022 set of security patch updates, as well as Android 12's colour picker.
Additionally, Microsoft has bundled a Windows-inspired wallpaper and has included a dedicated pen menu for the Surface Slim Pen 2. Moreover, the company claims to have optimised battery usage and performance in Microsoft Teams, which also now supports meeting transfers through the Time widget. Seemingly, Android 12L will be the end of the line for the first Surface Duo. In comparison, the Surface Duo 2 should receive a minimum of Android 13.
