Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Pro 6, Core i5, 128 GB
The i5 model without a fan is slower than the i7 model, and its battery life is not much better. In return, it is completely silent and significantly cheaper. Is this the mainstream tablet for everyone? Update 11/7/2018: 256 GB SSD is faster

The Surface Pro 6 isn't for everyone. It's for people who will truly benefit from having a detachable 2-in-1 that's light enough to carry anywhere and flexible enough to use as a tablet or laptop.

Microsoft hasn’t broken any new ground with the Surface Pro 6 unless you consider the quad-core 8th-gen processors to be a breakthrough.

If you are considering buying a Surface Pro then yes, this is the best yet. Great screen, battery and power to burn. It is still the one although I love the HP Envy x2 and ASUS Zen. I will be anxiously awaiting a review of HP’s new luxury leather Folio x2 just released.

The sixth-gen Pro is the best to date thanks largely to improved battery life. However, the familiar form factor, bezels that are larger than competitors' equivalents, and lack of USB-C port feels like this Surface is holding back from what's around the corner.

Regrettably, the Surface Pro 6 carries on the repair, or un-repairability tradition scoring 1-out-of-10. While that is not good, it is due to copious amounts of hot melt glue and almost everything inside being surface mounted. While batteries are replaceable, the path to get there is fraught with danger.

With a slight power boost and a new color choice, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 may not have changed much from the previous iteration, but what we loved then, we still love now.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 6 is the latest iteration of its iconic Windows tablet, complete with an 8th-generation, quad-core chip inside of it. While it's nearly identical to earlier Surface Pro versions, that means its design remains one of the best—plus, it offers very good battery life compared to similar competition.

The latest Surface Pro tablet doesn't make any radical design changes, but the performance jump makes it viable as a mainstream performance laptop replacement.

The Surface Pro 6 is the complete tablet PC package: It’s fast, light and has a great keyboard cover. But that was also true of last year’s model. And it’s facing stiffer competition this year from the Surface Go.

Set aside what the Surface Pro 6 should be, though, and what you have is this: Microsoft’s implicit statement that the Surface Pro lineup has reached its zenith, and needs no further improvement save for periodic upgrades. HP and Lenovo would probably disagree. I stand by what I said in my review of the Surface Pro (2017): You can’t go wrong buying a Surface Pro 6. But you might be able to do better.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is all about performance improvements tied with a shiny new color scheme. Beyond that, not much – if anything – has changed.

Comment
Model: The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is a 2-in-1 laptop with the latest 8th Gen Intel Core processor. From office to home, airport to open road, a user can certainly power their life on the Surface Pro 6. Users can unplug, pack light, and get productive all day with the Surface Pro 6. The Surface Pro 6 can be adjusted to three modes, which are laptop mode, studio mode and tablet mode. It has a quality-feeling magnesium body with slightly rounded edges for hand-held comfort. Users can adjust to the modes with the innovative, built-in Kickstand and Type Cover. Microsoft went for matte over glossy for the finish, so fingerprints are minimized on the device. Starting at just 711 g (1.7 lb), a user can work virtually anywhere with the Surface Pro 6, an ultra-light and portable touchscreen laptop with the creative versatility of touch and pen. The device measures at 11.5” x 7.9” x 0.33” (292 mm x 201 mm x 8.5 mm). As for the display, the Surface Pro 6 comes with a 12.3” PixelSense display with 2,736 x 1,824 (267 PPI) resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio, and 10 point multi-touch. It is slightly improved from the predecessor. The Surface Pro 6's display now has a stronger contrast ratio of 1,500:1 compared to the previous model’s 1,300:1 figure. The display is nice and bright with plenty of color vibrancy, especially in the ‘enhanced' display mode.
The Surface Pro 6 starts with a Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. It can go up to a Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage. There's no discrete GPU and again no USB-C connection which means no access to external graphics cards. The Surface Pro 6 has 13.5 hours of battery life on local video playback. The battery life will be enough for a day of work, or to play Netflix videos and some games. Like most Surface Pro devices, a user won’t be playing high-end games on this due to the built-in Intel graphics. For connectivity, it comes with a USB 3.0 port, 3.5 mm Headphone jack, microSDXC card reader, a mini DisplayPort, a Surface Type Cover port and a Surface Connect port. There’s no USB-C here, and no ThunderBolt 3 support. That means users can’t charge their phone with the same charger as the Surface Pro 6. As a conclusion, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 has slight improvement compared to its predecessor. It is a minor refresh of the Surface Pro series which is lightweight and convenient, especially for users who work on the go.

Series:
Microsoft Surface Pro (2017) is the fifth generation in the Surface Pro family. The Surface Pro is solid as a rock and exudes a sense of futuristic quality. It’s also well-designed, with a look and feels that, while minimally changed from the Surface Pro 4, is still an improvement. The corners are more rounded, and the exhaust vents along the edges are less pronounced. There aren’t many moving parts in the Surface Pro itself. The power and volume buttons along the top are easy to find by feel, and have a crisp action, while the kickstand is smooth and reliably holds the tablet at chosen angle. It now opens up to 165 degrees, an increase from the Surface Pro 4, which opened 150 degrees. Fully flexed, the kickstand can turn Surface Pro into a nearly-flat slate. If a user decides to flip into tablet mode for a moment and fold back the Type Cover, the keyboard will turn off when the cover is tucked back. It can even switch Windows 10 into tablet mode if desired. It attaches to the tablet with strong magnets and connects via a physical port, meaning there’s zero lag when typing. The Surface Pro sports two front-firing speakers on each side of the display. There are small cutouts in the glass to let the sound through, and the design provides impressive sound for a tablet. Music is great, with surprising range, and there’s even a hint of bass. The speakers also get surprisingly loud and can fill a decent sized room without distorting.
The Surface Pro features up to a seventh-generation Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It is seen that the Surface Pro offers a cutting-edge CPU, solid RAM and SSD options, and full support for all of Microsoft’s most innovative Windows 10 technologies. All that will keep the machine relevant for years to come. The Surface Pro is refreshingly light on bloatware. While it’s stocked with the usual Microsoft Windows 10 apps and a handful of casual games, it’s otherwise unencumbered with junk software. The Surface utility is also a nice app that offers the ability to configure the Surface Pen and get some useful information about your machine. Microsoft is using a 45-watt-hour battery in the Surface Pro, which is an increase from the 38 watt-hour battery that was packed into the Surface Pro 4. The Surface Pro also uses more efficient seventh-generation Intel Core processors. Taken together, the new model offers improved battery life over its predecessor. The Surface Pro is eminently portable, at 0.33 inches thick and 1.73 pounds. Even with the Signature Type Cover attached, the machine is easy to carry around and slip into a bag. It might not be quite as thin and light as the iPad Pro, but it’s also a much more powerful machine that can run real PC applications. The Surface Pro bring a whole new meaning to the word tablet. It is a iPad like device but is actually a real computer.

Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
i5-8250U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,100 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
12.30":
This range of display format is largely the upper limit for tablets and the lower limit for subnotebooks.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small in size and therefore easily portable. The tiny display has the added advantage of requiring little power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is exhausting for the eyes. High resolutions, which one is used to from a standard laptop, are almost not usable.
The same applies to tablets in this size range.

Microsoft smartphones and tablets have been tested since 2012. There are many reviews with average ratings. The reader's interest is quite given, but the market share is not big enough for the Top 5 smartphone manufacturers (as of 2016).
81.85%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
