Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 15 Ryzen 5 3580U

82.9% Surface Laptop 3 15 Ryzen 5 Review: Microsoft Can Do Better | Notebookcheck
The metal Surface Laptop 3 is the sleekest Surface laptop yet and its implementation of AMD Ryzen is one of the better examples in the Ultrabook space. Unfortunately, almost everything else feels outdated.

An elegant design with a more-angular take on Apple's classic wedge-laptop look propels the Surface Laptop 3 to earn some of our respect. Unfortunately, less-than-inspiring performance — across battery life, overall speed and gaming — disappointed our expectations for a 15-inch laptop at this price.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 has some of the best battery life we’ve seen in a 15-inch laptop, which should be lauded. However, this laptop falls well short on both the power and versatility that most expect from a 15-inch device, making it tough to recommend to most people.

80% Surface Laptop 3 review: AMD Ryzen makes a good 15-inch Surface, but Intel's version may be better
Source: PC World English
I think the Surface Laptop 3’s sleek aesthetic continues to be worth indulging, and the performance, though not earth-shattering, helps set the Laptop’s bar higher. Those who are more inclined towards brutalist efficiency should also consider looking at recent introductions like the Acer Swift 3—there’s a lot of functionality there for under $1,000, even if you won’t like the display and keyboard as much. Lenovo’s ThinkBook is also worth considering.

With a large 3:2 screen, a comfortable touchpad, light weight for its size, and decent performance (powered by new partner AMD), Microsoft's larger-screen Surface Laptop 3 is an excellent mainstream machine.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 (15-Inch) Review: AMD Ryzen Surface Edition
Source: AnandTech English
Overall, the Surface Laptop 3 15 is a great laptop. It keeps all of the design cues of the smaller generation and just makes it a bit bigger, retaining the same thin & light design and keeping it easy to travel with. Microsoft has forged a solid partnership with AMD, and the Ryzen APU that's at the heart of this laptop brings with it great GPU performance and good CPU performance, even though it is at the cost of overall battery life. Plus, if you have been eyeing up the previous generation Surface Laptop 2 and were held up due to the USB situation – or uncertainty about the Alcantara keyboard deck – the new generation does offer fixes there, which makes the Surface Laptop 3 a much more palatable device.

70% Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 15-Inch Review: It’S A Bigger Surface Laptop
Source: The Verge English
Still, if you were hoping that the 15-inch Laptop 3 would be more than just a bigger Surface Laptop, I’m sorry to report that you’ll be disappointed. Fortunately, there are plenty of other, more powerful 15-inch laptops available, such as Apple’s MacBook Pro, Dell’s XPS 15, or even Microsoft’s own Surface Book 2. I don’t know if Microsoft needed to make a 15-inch version of the Surface Laptop, but it did, and it mostly did a good job with it.

Hands on: Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 review
Source: Techradar English
While the 13-inch model update is not much more than a spec bump with a new aluminum finish, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 is one of Microsoft's 2019 show-stealers. AMD's Ryzen debut in a flagship machine cannot be overstated, particularly with specially designed silicon in tandem with Microsoft's hardware team.

Model: One of Microsoft's biggest successes is undoubtedly the Surface series. They easily carried Microsoft in terms of hardware after several trials with mobile phones before. The reason why Surface devices became a success is because Microsoft started to understand its users' needs and acted accordingly. Surface devices provide a smooth mobile Windows experience, are lightweight and from some ways well optimized for Windows.

Now, our current device uses the AMD Ryzen 5 3580U. Naming can sound a bit different, because it is not a regular Ryzen chip. Instead it is something specially produced for the Surface Laptop 3. Difference? It is hidden in the GPU. While regular Ryzen chips come with the Vega 8 GPU, this model comes with the Vega 9. There are other variations with Intel's latest 10th generation processors of course, but the AMD partnership is a nice variety. The difference between Intel and AMD models is going to be about base speeds. But since the AMD chips are special production, benchmarks will tell us a better story.

There is also a 13.5 inch model available for purchase. Is the Surface Laptop going to be a good investment? Yes and no. Yes, well because it is Microsoft, so your Windows experience will be a good one. No, because there are tons of other laptops with Windows installed and they also provide good experience. Especially considering the price tag of the top versions, which is around and above 2,000 USD, I think you can easily get a Asus Zenbook Pro Duo 14 which is also innovative with its dual screen and also has very similar specs and some versions also have better GPUs than the Surface 3.

But what makes the Surface Laptop 3 different is its premium feeling. It is completely made of aluminium. Basically, it is a way of saying, "I am different". What Apple is doing with the MacBook line, Microsoft is kind of trying to achieve with its Surface Laptop line. Is it a success? Both yes and no. Yes, because they are good laptops. No, because unlike Apple products, Windows devices lose value too fast.

If I were to invest 2,000 USD into a laptop, I would have to come up with my priorities. Is it mobility? Is it performance? Is it premium feeling? I am saying this, because if it is pure performance, there are better options with better CPUs. The Surface Laptop 3 comes with low voltage CPUs, so they are kind of capped in terms of performance whereas there are models from MSI, Asus and Dell with 45 Watt CPUs. Then mobility. There are even models with around 1.5 kg weight that provides better performance than the Surface 3. But they might be a bit more expensive.

What would I pick? Well, I am in between. My heart says I should go for the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo 14 series. Not because it basically has the same config as Surface Laptop 3 models, it also has a differentiation, which is the second screen. Other than that, it is completely up to your taste in laptops. The Surface Laptop 3 is a premium device and will fulfill your expectations.

AMD Vega 9: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 9 CUs (= 576 shaders) and a clock of up to 1300 MHz. Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
3580U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.2 to 3.8 GHz. Compared to the similar Ryzen 5 3500U, the 3580U includes a faster GPU with 9 instead of 8 CUs.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

This display size represents a treshold between the small sizes of subnotebooks and ultrabooks and the standard-sizes of office- and multimedia laptops on the other hand. Laptops with that size are somewhat rare, nowadays.

1.54 kg:

This weight is typical for very big tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks and convertibles with a 11-13 inch display-diagonal.

Microsoft smartphones and tablets have been tested since 2012. There are many reviews with average ratings. The reader's interest is quite given, but the market share is not big enough for the Top 5 smartphone manufacturers (as of 2016).

78.27%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
