Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 13.8 Copilot+
Similar to the new Surface Pro, Microsoft has also now introduced a new edition of its Surface laptop (now in its 7th generation) that relies exclusively on Qualcomm’s ARM processor. We review the updated 13.8-inch model with the Snapdragon X Elite with which Microsoft aims to defeat the MacBook Air M3.

mentioned this before, but the direction that Microsoft took with this laptop is, well, rather uncharacteristic. The Microsoft Surface Laptop is light, airy, and brings some fun to the Copilot+ line. I would have loved to see this laptop with an OLED display, but the one we get instead is still quite nice, especially with this fantastic battery life. The Surface Laptop is a flagship mid-range device that's well-rounded enough to take on a variety of roles. Despite a few trade-offs, it's everything it should be for the price.

Overall, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 + Copilot,is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a high-performing, stylish, and long-lasting laptop. It offers some great specs, great UX and just overall really does make me consider jumping over to a Windows powered laptop completely. Granted there are a couple of issues, missing shutter for the webcam when not in use, battery life which is ok, not great but better than some laptops I have used in the past, sound is fine albeit a little muffled because there is no speakers on the main body like Apple has with its MacBooks, these are just some small things that I hope Microsoft will learn from and bring to the next generation.

In the last couple of years, artificial intelligence has really come of age – and that means that older devices can suddenly feel left behind.Microsoft’s new Surface devices, however, are built for the AI revolution. Powered by the Snapdragon X series with its powerful NPU (neural processing unit), the Copilot+ PCs feel snappy in day-to-day use and, equally importantly, are ready for all the clever AI enhancements that still feel like magic. What kind of enhancements? The most obvious is the big, inviting Copilot key found on both computers’ keyboards. Simply give it a press, and you have instant access to Microsoft’s “everyday AI companion”.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 is a top-notch MacBook Air alternative. Its entry price is reasonable, the design is great and the consistent sense of quality throughout is admirable. Microsoft pulls its usual wheeze with upgrades, though, asking for a lot of cash at every turn. And given the Surface Laptop seems to value quiet operation over raw peak performance, this isn't the obvious pick for power fiends. If you can get by with meagre storage space, or find a deal on the Surface Laptop, this could be one of the best routes into this new style of AI-ready laptops. Just be careful when picking your perfect spec.

For the business user, we'd argue that the new Surface Laptop 7 is the best of breed from the current crop of Snapdragon ARM laptops. The range of models is far wider than what's on offer from the competition while the 3:2, 2.5K display is ideal for the business user. We also like the design, build quality, ease of access to the internals, and excellent battery life which even if bettered by the Lenovo T14s Gen 6 is still extraordinarily good for a Windows laptop. The support for Microsoft's excellent Surface Dock is also a feature not to be undervalued. The author never leaves home without it. The Surface Laptop 7 is a little on the pricey side at the top of the range, but £1,549 (£1,290 ex-VAT) for the 15in, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD model seems like good value from where we are sitting. Highly recommended.

Everyone except gamers can appreciate this newest Microsoft laptop. If you're working off an old laptop that's heavy, has a screen that can't seem to work under a glare or low light, or isn't getting the job done from a performance perspective, then an upgrade to the Surface Laptop 7 could be just what you need to take you through the next few years of life. It's a powerful option for high school and college students and any adult in the market for a responsive, lightweight, smaller laptop. I wouldn't recommend it for younger students or children; the price tag alone knocks them out of the equation for me, but a typical Chromebook should work for most in that age range. The bonus here are the AI features, which Microsoft will undoubtedly add to and improve upon as it upgrades various software programs. Creators and artistic types will enjoy the ease of use AI offers for design work; the rest of us will just like the way that AI is close at hand via the Copilot button.

With the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7, Microsoft needed to show the world that Copilot+ and the new Snapdragon processors weren’t just a load of hot air. And it has managed it. The MacBook Air is no longer the only ARM-powered productivity laptop we can recommend, but while Copilot+ PCs wait for software support to fully catch up with their impressive technology, it’s worth looking before you leap into this particular computing revolution.

Despite my initial scepticism about the ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processor, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 CoPilot+ provides me with a sense of renewed, albeit cautious optimism for the platform. It’s fast, responsive when it needs to be, and has utterly outstanding battery life that’ll give the M3-powered Apple MacBook Pro series a run for its money, but above all else, it’s uncomplicated. While 13.8-inches is far from the standard for a thin and light, the fact that it is lightweight makes its an ideal alternative for the productivity warrior on the go.

If you told me a year ago that the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 would be a top contender for best laptop of 2024, I would have laughed in your face. But here we are and it's truly an incredible portable machine, all thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip it's equipped with. Performance, battery life, light and thin, price, sound quality, and more are all top-notch.

With nearly 23 hours of battery life and MacBook-beating performance, of course this Microsoft laptop is worth it. The Surface Laptop 7 is the longest-lasting Windows laptop we've tested in 2024, blowing my expectations out of the water. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 combines a sleek design, a powerful Snapdragon X Elite chipset, and the longest battery life for ultimate productivity and AI-powered creativity. Apple must be sweating through its armpits with the launch of the Surface Laptop 7 because — holy cow — this is one hell of a laptop. Its power and energy efficiency is serious, but its AI-boosted apps makes Windows fun again. For the first time in a long time, the preinstalled apps on a Windows PC are offering attention-stealing entertainment.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 7 promised the earth in its marketing materials, with high power and efficiency, a responsive display and class-leading battery life. For the most part, it delivers on those promises with an ultrabook that looks the part, offers a solid overall display in a competent size and some of the best battery life we’ve ever tested. There is a bigger picture here, though – the potential of Arm-based Windows. When executed correctly, it makes for the ideal Windows experience with the combination of beefy performance, if a little lacking in graphical oomph, and unrivaled efficiency. That’s been hard to come by in the past. The Surface Laptop 7 may not offer as much power in raw terms as the likes of the Apple MacBook Air (M3) or Dell XPS 14 (2024), but it does so while being completely silent and providing unmatched battery life in a lightweight, portable chassis.

As I stated earlier, the Surface Laptop has always been a laptop I prefer when I’m actually using it. The larger 3:2 aspect ratio is fantastic, and I’ve always like the keyboard. The price, performance, battery life, and limited configurations always made it a bit of a nonstarter though. The Surface Laptop 7th Edition fixes nearly every issue this laptop has always had. The performance and battery life are great now, and the improvements to the display and trackpad are the cherry on top. It’s not a perfect laptop, and there are still some areas where the 15-inch MacBook Air M3 surpasses it, especially when it comes to battery life and the speakers. Either way, the Surface Laptop 7th Edition is the best Surface PC there’s ever been and the best of the current crop of Copilot+ PCs I’ve looked at so far.

Still, those able to sidestep or live with the minor compromises stand to benefit from something quite unique — a Windows laptop with astonishing battery life. Looking optimistically, the native Arm application landscape can only improve once Copilot Plus PCs enter the mainstream and developers see more need to support the platform. Microsoft and Qualcomm are committed to the project, and it’s rumored that other Arm chipsets will hit the market next year, so this seems inevitable. Jumping in early is always a risk, especially at $999 and well beyond, but we’re seven years into Windows on Arm, and the foundations are solid enough for the adventurous and even mainstream users to give it a try. It’ll be wobbly for some but an equally brilliant experience for others.

The speakers are better suited for Zoom calls than music playback, though the sound is above average compared to its competitors. They get loud at max volume while maintaining clarity, but they lack the bass response needed for full enjoyment of most music. Ports are minimal, with three USB ports -- a pair of USB-4 ports and a USB-A port -- on the left side and the Surface Connect port for power on the right. I like the magnetic Surface Connect port because it keeps both USB-C ports free when charging the laptop and lessens the chance that I trip over the power cord and yank the laptop off my desk, sending it crashing to the floor. Still, you'll need to provide your own adapter for HDMI or Ethernet. With the arrival of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7, Apple's MacBook Air finally has some competition from the Windows side of the aisle.

Overall, Microsoft got it right with the latest version of the Surface Laptop 7. While I don’t find the AI features to be particularly useful in their current state, you can safely ignore those and still have one of the best-performing laptops on the market. The battery life will get you through a full day of work and play with ease. Add in the slick design and nice color choices, and you have a device you’ll be proud to carry with you everywhere. Of course, those who don’t like Windows as an operating system are unlikely to be swayed by the things the Surface Laptop 7 offers and will probably want to stick with their MacBooks. For those who do like Windows 11, I have no problem recommending this laptop — whether you choose the base model or you want to invest a little more for a larger screen, more performance or both.

Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop was built to redefine the Windows laptop experience, and it partially succeeds. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip can go toe-to-toe with Apple’s M3 in processor performance and defeats Intel’s Core Ultra 7. It’s also far more efficient than prior AMD and Intel processors, which boosts the Surface Laptop’s battery life to the top of its class. Surprisingly, the switch to Qualcomm doesn’t cause major problems for app compatibility. Nearly all the apps we tried worked well and many had versions developed for ARM processors like the Snapdragon X. We didn’t experience stability issues in Windows or in productivity apps and software. Games are the exception, and many perform poorly, including some 2D games.

While the road here was beset with bumps and potholes, the Surface Laptop 7 has arrived ready to compete. And it isn’t just a great rival to the MacBook Air, it’s paving a new road ahead for Windows PCs. It’s fast, quiet, has excellent battery life and plays nicely with most of your apps. Sure, a few major programs still need additional support and you may run into issues when trying to play games or installing niche software. And when you spec it up, it can get a bit pricey too. The 15-inch model starts at $1,300, but our review unit with a Snapdragon X Elite chip, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD goes for $2,100.

The performance and battery life are pulling all the weight for the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7th Edition, and that spark comes from Qualcomm. I wanted to love the Surface Laptop, but too many cons started stacking on one another. The monitor ghosting is assuredly the last chip to get me to fold. If you’re looking for a premium laptop that can do almost everything you need, go with the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023). Longer battery life and a cheaper price will comfort you. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7th Edition is not a bad laptop, but a disappointment considering it comes from the biggest name in tech and the company with the leading PC operating system.

Now is an exciting time in the world of laptops and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 is in the vanguard. It’s big, beautifully made, has better battery life than a MacBook Air, is plenty powerful and impressively easy to repair and upgrade. It’s a higher-class computer than the Asus Vivobook and it has advantages over the MacBook Air 15in as well. Even the price, which is higher than the Vivobook, is still low enough to undercut Apple’s rival machines. In short, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 is an easy machine to recommend – it’s a fantastic premium laptop that’s a dream to use.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop is a success, though not without its issues. After years of misfires, Arm on Windows is finally a viable option. With it comes access to new hardware, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite, which proves an alluring alternative to Intel and AMD devices. Qualcomm’s chip isn’t a good choice for gaming, but it’s great for battery life and it scores very well in CPU benchmarks with native Arm support. These traits make the Surface Laptop a solid choice for people who travel frequently or just don’t like to worry about battery life.

I’ve fallen in love with the Surface Laptop over the past week of using it. The battery life has blown me away, and the performance has mostly felt like using a regular thin and lightweight laptop. It no longer feels like Windows on Arm is being held back by underpowered hardware and major software issues. But to really make this new Surface Laptop work at its best, you still need native ARM64 apps. That situation is a lot better than it was a few years ago, with more of the top apps now native, but if you still need to run emulated ones, performance will vary depending on how complicated the application is, and battery life will be impacted, too. If you don’t venture beyond the top Windows apps, you’ll probably have a great experience like I did in terms of performance and battery life.

Regardless of how well it performs or how much better its app compatibility is, we still don't see an ironclad reason to run out and buy a Copilot+ PC just yet. The Snapdragon X Elite is a quick processor, and kudos are definitely due to Qualcomm for making the laptop-chip market a three-player game now. And most applications we use run without issue. But Intel's and AMD’s Copilot-ready chips are close behind, and x86 will obviate compatibility issues altogether. We’ve seen long-lasting Intel Core Ultra laptops already, and Lunar Lake, in particular, promises lots of speed, too, so waiting may be worthwhile. This isn’t to take away from the new Surface Laptop itself.

While I've always found touchscreen functionality to be more beneficial on larger screens, using the smaller 13.8-inch Surface Laptop feels more like a 2-in-1 tablet. When my typing space is confined, like on a bus, plane, or crowded café, being able to simply reach over and tap, swipe, and drag elements on the screen is very helpful and intuitive.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 ($999 to start) is the first Surface Laptop to ship with a Qualcomm CPU inside, and Microsoft is making a meal of this upgrade. That's because the Surface Laptop 7 — or as Microsoft brands it, the Surface Laptop 7th Generation — comes with either a Snapdragon X Plus or Snapdragon X Elite chip inside. These new Qualcomm chips have NPUs (Neural Processing Units) that qualify them to be the first of Microsoft's new Copilot+ PCs, Windows 11 computers with NPUs capable of supporting advanced AI features in Windows. These new chips are marketed as delivering long-lasting performance with support for on-device AI, and we're looking forward to putting them to the test when we do a full review.

The Surface Laptop line could use a shot in the arm, and Microsoft is clearly hoping Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X chips can deliver it. While I'd love to see the company embark on a bolder redesign of its workhorse laptop, it's clear that's not happening this year. After all, the Surface Laptop is intended to be a simple, no-nonsense portable PC for writers, coders, and anyone who needs to get things done. The tall screen and comfy keyboard have always supported that mission, and now the addition of Snapdragon chips inside could supercharge these laptops' capabilities even as the upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 makes them more future-proof.

Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 3.8 TFLOPS: An integrated graphics adapter that four Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors feature, as of Sep 2024. It has 1,536 unified shaders at its disposal that are said to run at up to 1,250 MHz. The underlying architecture is reportedly in many respects the same as what was used in the Adreno 730. While thankfully faster than the aging Intel Iris Xe (96 EUs), the Adreno fails to match the Radeon 780M meaning Baldur's Gate 3, a triple-A title released in 2023, is barely playable at 1080p on low with 23 fps on average. Triple-A games of 2024 fare even worse, in no small part due to Qualcomm's subpar graphics drivers.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes.
