Micro Four Thirds lives: Panasonic upgrades three lenses, including Leica zoom
Since the launch of the Lumix DC-G97E ($697 on Amazon) in February 2025, Panasonic has not released any new Micro Four Thirds cameras, and there are currently no rumors about a new mFT camera from the manufacturer.
However, the company has apparently not given up on the system yet, as Panasonic Japan has now reissued three lenses. The improvements are minor, but this announcement means that production of these lenses will continue for the foreseeable future, and that the end of Micro Four Thirds has at least been postponed. The following lenses have received an update:
- Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25 mm f/1.4 II ASPH.
- Panasonic Lumix G 42.5 mm f/1.7 ASPH. Power OIS
- Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12–60 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH.
Panasonic has adjusted the lettering on all three lenses so that it appears in a significantly darker shade – this is intended to prevent the lettering from causing reflections when photos are taken from a very close distance. The zoom lens and the 42.5 mm lens have also been given a new fluorine coating on the front element, which is designed to make the lenses easier to clean and to repel dust and water.
All three lenses will go on sale in Japan in mid-September. Panasonic has not yet commented on an international launch. The lenses can be identified by a new model number ending in "A". The 25 mm f/1.4 II now bears the model number H-XA025A and costs ¥82,500 ($518) in Japan, the 42.5 mm f/1.7 has the model number H-HS043A and is priced at ¥55,000 ($345), and the 12–60 mm zoom lens with the model number H-ES12060A costs ¥137,500 ($860).
