Mi Mix 4 underdisplay selfie-camera confirmed in live photos
Xiaomi has been turning it on of late when it comes to delivering cutting-edge smartphone design and technology. The Mi Mix Alpha Concept Phone, which will be available late this year in limited quantities, completely re-writes the rules for the candy bar smartphone form factor by adopting a wraparound display. Now it looks like the company could be first to market with the first under-display selfie camera on a smartphone if leaked live photos of the Mix 4 are accurate.
We know that under-display camera technology is high on the list of features smartphone makers are trying to bring to market with Oppo demonstrating the technology earlier this year, while Essential and Apple are also said to be investigating the tech. Xiaomi also revealed that it has busy at work on integrating the technology into a smartphone as their explanation of the technology below demonstrates.
Until now, all-display smartphones have either had to integrate a mechanical pop-up camera or resorted to notches and display cut outs to integrate a selfie camera while trying to maximize screen real estate. If under-display camera technology works as advertised, it would help solve this dilemma once and for all. However, we don’t expect it to be perfect in the initial iterations, much like under-display finger-print readers, and there are hints in the photos that Xiaomi mightn’t be all the way there yet with the cameras seemingly visible through the display.
