Lumia debuts "world's smallest fitness wearable" - earrings weighing less than a gram

Lumia 2 are a pair of new smart earrings designed to monitor blood flow to the head. The primary aim of this wearable is to provide its users with helpful info regarding their energy and focus. It does so by tracking a physiological factor which is often missed by wrist-based devices like the Garmin Forerunner 165 - now $199 on Amazon. Developed through collaborations with researchers at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard, the technology is now moving from research partner use to a general consumer product.
The hardware weighs less than one gram and is constructed from materials such as gold, silver, platinum, or titanium. It uses a component called the Lumia Core, which serves as a smart earring back housing the PreciseLight sensor, processors, and battery. Users can wear the device as huggie hoops, cuffs, or studs, and a specific technology lets it attach to standard push-back earrings.
Aside from basic circulatory monitoring, the Lumia 2 offers sleep trends, temperature signals, and cycle awareness. The system also gives its users a readiness score to help them understand how daily habits like hydration or posture affect their body for better or worse. As per the company, the hardware can capture data more precisely compared to traditional wearables, since the company's sensors (including what they refer to as a "PreciseLight" sensor) sit closer to the brain and heart.
Each swappable battery pack claims one week of power. While the product does give users wellness insights, it is not an FDA-cleared medical device and is not intended to diagnose or treat specific conditions. The earrings are sold in pairs, although the sensing core is only worn on the left ear.
Lumia 2 will be available in the United States and Canada first, for a price of 249 USD. Potential buyers can reserve early access and pricing through the official website, or via the Kickstarter campaign page where they'll go live for crowdfunding. The subscription will set users back by $9.99 a month. The company also adds that existing owners of the previous generation can upgrade through a specific membership program.

Lumia 2: Smart Earrings That Help You Understand Daily Wellness, Now Made For Everyone
Fine Jewelry Meets Next-Gen Wellness Sensing in the World’s Smallest Wearable
Once Exclusive to Research Partners, Lumia’s Innovative Blood Flow Sensing is Now Designed for Everyday Awareness and Healthier Living
BOSTON - April 29 - Lumia announces the launch of Lumia 2, the world’s first smart earrings that help users better understand blood flow to the head, a key, yet often invisible factor tied to energy, focus, and cognitive performance. Originally developed in collaboration with researchers at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard to explore blood flow trends, Lumia 2 is now designed for anyone seeking to make more informed choices about their daily wellness.
Indistinguishable from fine jewelry, Lumia 2 can be worn as huggie hoops, cuffs, and studs in gold and silver. With patent-pending SwitchBack™ technology, it even attaches to any push-back earring. The cuff version requires no piercing.
Built on nearly six years of engineering breakthroughs, Lumia 2 packs powerful sensors into a wearable smaller than 1 gram, five times smaller than AirPods, making it the world’s smallest wellness wearable. It’s the culmination of the team’s decades of experience, including work on miniaturized wearables like Bose sleepbuds.
More Than Just Blood Flow
In addition to continuous blood flow sensing, Lumia 2 now supports a broader range of wellness insights, including sleep trends, temperature signals, cycle awareness, and a daily readiness-style score. Its in-ear placement enables more accurate sensing than many traditional wearables.
“This is what comes after smart rings,” said Daniel Lee, co-founder and CEO of Lumia. “Just as Oura made rings smart, we’ve made earrings smart. Smart earrings open up a new era of wellness visibility through an elegant and unobtrusive form factor.”
The company also announced $7 million in additional investment funding from J2 Ventures, BonAngels Venture Partners, and prominent angel investors, along with $5.1 million in government contracts and grants, bringing total funding to $17.2 million.
How It Works
At the heart of Lumia 2 is the Lumia Core, a smart earring back that houses the second-gen PreciseLight™ sensor, processors, a battery, and a suite of wellness sensors. Positioned near both the heart and brain, it captures subtle changes not typically accessible via the wrist or finger.
Lumia also offers performance-optimized earrings designed for comfortable, all-day wear. Made from skin-friendly materials like platinum and titanium, they feature a secure locking back to help prevent accidental loss, along with a swappable battery pack system that allows charging without removing the earrings. The result is a low-profile design built to stay on throughout the day and night, whether you are sleeping, showering, getting dressed, or exercising. Each battery pack lasts a whole week. The Core is worn on the left ear only; earrings are sold in pairs.
The Power of Blood Flow Awareness
Many people experience fatigue, brain fog, or energy dips, yet their heart rate or blood pressure may show no clear cause. Lumia 2 provides insight into blood flow trends that can reflect how the body is responding to daily habits and routines. Clinically demonstrated at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard, with results including Pearson r=0.91 against ultrasound, Lumia’s continuous blood flow tracking shows what is really going on in your body throughout the day.
Blood flow is dynamic; it shifts with hydration, diet, posture, stress, and sleep. Lumia helps users visualize these shifts, encouraging more informed day-to-day decisions to feel and function better.
“Our team has been surprised by how much we’ve personally learned,” Lee added. “From seeing how different sitting positions affect mental clarity, to observing the impact of exercise or a high-carb lunch on circulation, these insights are changing how we live, not just how we measure.”
Wellness Designed for Real Life
Lumia 2 encourages sustainable wellness habits by making subtle body trends more visible and actionable. With support for cycle awareness, users can see how changes throughout the month may align with different wellness states. Without making fertility or diagnostic claims, Lumia simply provides gentle insights into these natural shifts over time.
Lumia is not a medical device. It is designed to support awareness, promote healthier routines, and offer actionable guidance, not to detect, treat, or diagnose any condition.
