Likely PS5 dummy test listing on Amazon reveals placeholder price of £599.99 (US$764) for both a 1 TB model and a 2 TB variant of the PlayStation 5 console
Heading into the PS5 event, fans around the world are keen to get hold of any tidbit of news about the next-gen console, especially the price. Recently, a failed attempt to use the pages of MediaMarkt to “leak” a price was reported, but now we have Amazon UK apparently posting listings for two variants of the PS5: A 1 TB model and a console with a 2 TB SSD. The price published was £599.99 (US$764), regardless of the size of the storage.
Unsurprisingly, the relevant pages have now been taken down, but there are screenshots available (see below). The pictures tellingly state “2020 Dummy ASIN” with ASIN standing for Amazon Standard Identification Number. So it seems very likely these were test listings that Amazon UK erroneously published. However, it does beg the question about the accuracy of the price, as it’s not a ridiculous figure like £1 or £9,999. A price tag of £599.99 (US$764) for the PS5 does not seem wholly unreasonable, although it would be much higher than most had expected.
However, the mention of a 1 TB model and 2 TB model obviously casts complete doubt over the whole pricing incident. It has already been revealed that the PS5 will come with an 825 GB SSD and the next step up would be 1.65 TB. Even if Amazon simply rounded the storage capacity figures up, clearly there would be a different price tag for each variant – maybe £499.99 (US$637) for the “1 TB” version? Someone has even claimed to have placed an order via the Amazon PS5 listing, although that seems highly dubious.
Listings for PS5 games also appeared on Amazon UK, although the placeholder images mention the developer rather than a title: Namco Bandaii, Rockstar, 2k, Bethesda, etc. These were possibly made in anticipation of the scheduled game reveal event taking place on June 11. Prices of £69.99 (US$89) have been published next to the game placeholders, so fans better start crossing their fingers and hoping that Amazon’s briefly listed PS5 console price and game prices are not the real deal.
