Deal | Less than $1: Cinematic adventure hits its lowest-ever price on Steam

Beyond: Two Souls centers on Jodie Holmes, who has been unusually connected to a supernatural entity named Aiden since birth. Players accompany her through around 15 years of her life, experiencing vastly different chapters – from personal tragedies to dangerous CIA missions. Gradually, the goal is to discover what Aiden actually is and why Jodie, of all people, is connected to him. However, the story is not told chronologically: The game repeatedly jumps between different periods of Jodie’s life, meaning her story only gradually comes together like a puzzle.

Aiden is much more than an invisible companion. Players can regularly switch between him and Jodie, giving them different ways to interact with the environment. While Jodie talks to people, uses objects and moves through the game world normally, Aiden can float through walls, bypass obstacles and use his powers to influence certain objects or people. In dangerous situations, he can also protect Jodie. Those who prefer can even split these tasks with a second player: In local Duo Mode, one player controls Jodie while the other takes control of Aiden. Beyond: Two Souls normally costs just under $20 on Steam. However, a 95% discount reduces the price to $0.99 until August 17. According to SteamDB, the deal marks a new all-time low – the previous maximum discount was 90%.

In terms of gameplay, Beyond: Two Souls is strongly reminiscent of Heavy Rain – hardly surprising, considering both adventures were developed by French studio Quantic Dream. Fittingly, Heavy Rain is also currently 95% off and available for less than $1 for the first time. Instead of complex combat or elaborate puzzles, Beyond: Two Souls focuses on dialogue, decisions, quick-time events, short exploration sections and occasional stealth sequences. Even mistakes often do not mean the end: If an action goes wrong, the situation adapts accordingly and the story continues. The gameplay therefore primarily serves to involve players as directly as possible in the narrative.

This approach was received very well by German gaming magazine PC Games. The gaming publication awarded it 9 out of 10 points, praising the emotional story, strong characters and numerous decisions in particular. The elaborate presentation with performance capture, as well as Elliot Page and Willem Dafoe in the leading roles, also received praise. The editors were less impressed by the gameplay challenge. Many actions are limited to hotspots and predetermined inputs, while even the action sequences rarely pose a real challenge for experienced players. Aiden’s supernatural abilities do little to change that.

The user ratings are also impressive: On Steam, 87% of more than 41,000 reviews are positive, while Metacritic lists a User Score of 8.0. The Metascore is somewhat lower at 70. On the Steam Deck, the game is rated “Verified.”
