CES 2020 | Lenovo introduces its first ever external GPU
Lenovo has unveiled its Legion BoostStation eGPU as part of its CES event this year. It is the OEM's inaugural external GPU, and features an aluminium build and a transparent window. The latter functions to display the card in question and also presumably for cooling. It is designed for tool-free installation, and weighs just shy of 20 pounds (lb) (about 9 kilograms (kg)).
Therefore, Lenovo asserts that it can fit into any home gaming set-up. The Legion BoostStation accomodates cards of 60x150x300 to 320mm (depending on where the power pin is located). There is also space for 1 SATA-based SSD or HDD, or 2 PCIe-based SSDs.
The eGPU also has 1 port for Thunderbolt 3; 2 for USB 3.1 (Gen 1); 1 for USB 2.0; 1 HDMI display and 1 RJ45 port. Its ATX power supply unit supports as much as 500W, and also handles notebook power delivery of up to 100W.
All in all, it seems Lenovo's new BoostStation may be an effective companion for many super-light ultrabooks, the new 15.6-inch Legion Y740S included. It will be available from May 2020, and will cost US$249.99 as a standalone unit. However, the OEM has also announced that bundles with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080, 2070 Super, 2060 Super, GTX 1660Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5700XT will also be forthcoming.
