Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 leak: Tiger Lake-H, NVIDIA RTX 30 Super Laptop GPUs, FHD webcam, 16:10 4K display, and more make for an impressive spec sheet
Recently, we reported on a leak about the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 that indicated Lenovo's upcoming multimedia flagship will have a taller 16:10 display. Now, we are getting to know additional specifications of the device and they seem to be quite droolworthy, especially because they reveal that new NVIDIA Ampere RTX 30 Super Laptop GPUs are in the offing.
A screen grab comparing the specifications of the 2020 ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3 with the upcoming X1 Extreme Gen 4 reveals several changes to the chassis design. While the overall chassis dimensions have been reduced in Gen 4, Lenovo has made the device slightly heavier at 1.82 kg compared to 1.8 kg last year. This could be due to the increased battery capacity from 80 Whr to 90 Whr.
The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 now sports a 16:10 display that comes in 2.5K and 4K (touch and non-touch) IPS options. The 4K screens are 10-bit and offer 600 nits brightness covering 100% Adobe RGB and 100% DCI-P3 (touch) color spaces. The 8-bit 2.5K panel, on the other hand, offers 400 nits brightness and covers 100% sRGB but is indicated to have a refresh rate of just 60 Hz.
The internals of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is where the real meat is at. This year, we see an upgrade to the new Intel 11th gen Tiger Lake-H platform that will be offered in Core i7 and Core i9 vPro variants. The intriguing part, however, is that Lenovo is indicating two new NVIDIA Ampere Laptop GPUs — the GeForce RTX 3070 Super and GeForce RTX 3080 Super. We've only heard rumors of a possible Ampere Super series for the desktop back in January, so this is the first time we are actually seeing an OEM spec sheet mentioning these SKUs.
While the actual specifications for the RTX 3070 Super and RTX 3080 Super Laptop GPUs are not known yet, the leaked X1 Extreme Gen 4 spec sheet indicates 8 GB and 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM, respectively, which means that at least the memory subsystem will be the same as current RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 Laptop GPUs. The other GPU options offered for the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 include the RTX 3060 Laptop GPU and the GTX 1650 Ti (non-Max-Q).
Aside from launching the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti desktop cards, NVIDIA hasn't said anything about upcoming Ampere Super Laptop GPUs at Computex 2021. However, known NVIDIA leaker kopite7kimi hinted about new laptop cards to a query by Videocardz. While there have been no indications of a GA103 GPU from kopite7kimi so far, it can be speculated that the slated RTX 30 Super would have to be based on GA103 since the RTX 3080 Laptop GPU based on GA104 is already a full GPU with all 6,144 CUDA cores enabled.
Other goodies coming to the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 include a FHD webcam, 90 Whr battery, a backlit keyboard with 1.5 mm key travel, a wide 115 mm glass touchpad, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, HDMI 2.1-out, and Wi-Fi 6E.
It is not clear when Lenovo plans to release the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4, but expect more information coming in Q3 2021 or later.
