Lenovo Legion Y740 Gaming Laptop Deep Dive Review With Benchmarks
Source: Hot Hardware English Archive.org version
The Lenovo Legion might not be the perfect gaming laptop, but it has a lot to offer in a sleek, attractive, competitively-priced package ($1,989 as tested). The Intel Core i7-8750H CPU and GeForce RTX graphics combo give the machine plenty of muscle and it also has an outstanding 144Hz FHD display that's ideal for a wide variety of content.

The Legion Y740 checks a lot of the right boxes, but at the same time, it misses on two of the important ones by quite a margin: the battery life and the typing experience. If you can live with those, you'll hardly get better value for your money in another performance laptop, as this scores excellent marks in the build, display, IO, performance and thermals departments, and is more affordable than most other similar devices on the market. Lenovo Legion Y740 15-inch review: RTX graphics in a slim package
Source: Neowin English Archive.org version
When I think of gaming PCs, I think of three categories: casual, mainstream, and premium. Casual gaming PCs are built for the person that doesn't game much, but wants to be able to if they want to. These people don't care about things like ray tracing and DLSS. Premium would be the best of the best, like the Alienware Area-51m, which actually has desktop parts. Premium gaming PCs also tend to include things like mechanical keyboards. They're built for those that care about gaming and nothing else.

Source: Laptop Mag English Archive.org version
The Lenovo Legion Y740 (15-inch) offers strong performance and a gorgeous 144Hz display, but its battery life isn't great. The 15-inch Lenovo Legion Y740 ($1,989) boasts the kind of power you'd expect from a machine with RTX graphics, and features a comfortable keyboard and a decently colorful 144Hz display. But it doesn't do quite enough to stand out and make our best gaming laptop list. On top of that, its battery life and bottom-bezel webcam are working against it.

2019 Lenovo Legion Y740 and Y540 gaming laptops – RTX graphics, G-Sync and improved cooling
Source: Ultrabook Review English Archive.org version
Nonetheless, I expect the Y540 to be a hit in the second part of the year, given its heritage and Lenovo’s aggressive pricing policies. It’s going to start at under $1000, but it’s months away from launch, so in the meantime you will find better value in some of the other best-buy gaming laptops out there.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is, without a doubt, a great gaming laptop. Not only does it deliver above-average performance, but it also has a stylish design that people would like to see. Aside from that, it has a 144Hz display, excellent audio quality, four exhaust vents, and it has an overall premium build. Its disadvantages, like the short battery life, are quite negligible at this point given that this is a gaming laptop after all.

You know, these gaming devices are getting sleeker and sleeker with every single year. And as we mentioned last year we were a little dissapointed to see the humble GTX 1050 Ti in a machine like the Legion Y730. It happened like Lenovo have heard us and hastily switched it for the brand new RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 Max-Q. And the result is… this laptop is a beast. Aluminum build, good looks, ferosious internals and great gaming power. When you insert a 144 Hz screen with a 95% coverage of sRGB and designer – level of color accuracy, things go near perfect with the Legion Y740.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is best described as competent. It's not the most powerful laptop around, but it definitely is fast enough for most purposes. It also runs cool, and while the design can look a bit dated, it's simple and tasteful enough that it won't offend. Furthermore, it is fit for use in an office so you don't have to be embarrassed about taking it out. Concerned about the flashy lighting? That can be easily toggled off.

Lenovo Legion Y740-15CHg-81HE0041GE

The Lenovo Legion Y740 makes its debut into the industry as one of the high-performance gaming laptops to date. Do not let the rainbow-colored keyboard distract or dissuade you from making a calculated decision – this seemingly mundane-looking laptop operates using the 9th generation Intel Core processor. The incorporation of this processor reflects upon the laptop’s prime design to handle pro-level and heavy-duty tasks which are commonly linked to Triple-A games that demand high-end specifications in order to run properly. On top of that, the Lenovo Legion Y740 is also boosted with additional horsepower for masterful gameplay experience through the combination of a 4.5 GHz Turbo, 6 cores, and 12 threads. Gamers can now refrain from dreading on a fear of missing out on the latest game launches just because their laptop could not support the graphics and system requirements. To capitalize on delivering an elite and immersive gaming experience, the Lenovo Legion Y740 is armed with the one-of-a-kind NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series graphics card. The Max-Q variant of this graphics card is optimized for efficiency, boasts a high-cooling method, and a 40 dB limit to suppress the noises generated by the cooling fans. These added competencies make certain that the Lenovo Legion Y740 can sustain long hours of gaming and prevent it from succumbing to forced shutdown due to overheating or data-processing failure. On top of that, the GeForce RTX 20 series graphics card is also powered by the ground-breaking NVIDIA Turing GPU architecture, which is bound to ramp up its audience’s gaming experience to a whole new level. This architecture is the first GPU in history to be capable of real-time ray tracing, which renders in-game graphics into a surreal degree of lifelike realism. With a 15.6-inch display stretching almost to the curved edges of the screen, game graphics are not only to be rendered by high-spec processors and graphic cards. The Lenovo Legion Y740 provides optional configurations to elevate its clientele’s gaming experience by offering the Nvidia G-SYNC technology and an impressive Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range (HDR) format. You would think that the gaming experience entailing the Legion Y740 could not achieve a higher tier than it already does. The rainbow back lights on the keys of the keyboard are not merely for aesthetic purpose. The colorful hues accentuate the Lenovo Legion Y740 keyboard’s capabilities for being one of the most responsive in-game controls for users to play around with. Users can take advantage of its 100 % anti-ghosting feature, bask in its Corsair iCUE RGB lighting, and tweak further upon a range of customizations to tailor the aptitude of the keyboard to one’s play style and comfort. Source: Techaeris English Archive.org version
While most powerhouse gaming laptops look the part, it’s nice that the Lenovo Legion Y740 doesn’t and not only for design, but also performance, this is currently one of my favourite gaming laptops. It’s not perfect, but it is where it counts so if you don’t care about battery life or plan on using the camera for streaming, this laptop is an absolute beast while remaining on the sleeker side in the looks department. Take those out and you’re looking at a 9.5/10 instead of the overall 8.8 it received taking those into account.

Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
The Lenovo Legion Y740 feels emblematic of this GPU generation changeover. Nvidia’s pushing ray tracing, but the content’s not really there to make good on it yet, and it leaves cards like the RTX 2070 Max-Q in a strange spot. Sure, the RTX generation is theoretically better, but only in specific instances. Ray tracing is years away from mattering much to the average user. In traditional benchmarks, the RTX 2070 Max-Q is about on a par with its predecessor—or worse, if you compare the RTX 2070’s Max-Q version to a full-size GTX 1070.

70% Lenovo Legion Y740 (9th Gen) review: A gaming laptop that looks all business
Source: Hardware Zone English Archive.org version
After all, Lenovo already has the IdeaPad L340 and Legion Y7000 if you want an affordable, nondescript gaming laptop. I'd get one of those if I were on a budget, and if I wasn't, I'd be willing to pay a few hundred dollars more for a laptop that feels better in hand and lasts longer. While the Legion Y740 may be cheaper than the competition, it's hardly chump change, and it's still competing against a range of notebooks with far better build quality and battery life. At this price point, it probably makes more sense to shell out a bit more for a more well-rounded option like the Razer Blade 15.

80% Lenovo Legion Y740 Review
Source: NDTV Gadgets English Archive.org version
The Lenovo Legion Y740 offers a well-crafted package, especially the configuration that we have which retails for Rs. 1,39,990 on Lenovo India's online store. It's well designed and built; the looks aren't too flashy; it has a very comfortable keyboard; the internals are powerful; and we like the HDR-capable display.

80% Lenovo Legion Y740 Review: A hulking beast with a touch of refinement
Source: Htxt Africa English Archive.org version
The Legion Y740 is a well constructed gaming notebook. It feels like Lenovo has focused on what is important, while trying to offer a competitively priced device. Unnecessary flourishes have been kept to a minimum, and this notebook could easily be used by someone who needs a powerful notebook for the latest AAA titles, as well as something that needs to be taking into the office.
