Leica achieves record sales thanks to Leica M11, hints at new Leitz Phone
In a recent presse release, Leica confirmed that it had generated record sales of EUR 485 million in the financial year from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, exceeding the previous record from the 2021/2022 financial year by EUR 41 million or 9%.
These results include the manufacturer's cameras, lenses, partnerships, products from the Leica Sports Optics range (such as thermal imaging cameras), and smaller projects such as the Leica ZM 1 wristwatch. According to the press release, the Leica M11 was one of the key drivers behind the increase in sales, as the EUR 8750 rangefinder camera was launched in January 2022 and introduced significant improvements, including a new 6-MP full-frame sensor and electronic shutter.
Leica once again expects strong sales in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, primarily thanks to the Leica M11-P and the Leica M11 Monochrom. Demand for the Leica Q3 is also expected to remain strong, while the Leica SL system is receiving "positive feedback" from customers, although Leica has not yet confirmed whether the system camera is a success.
While the collaboration with Xiaomi will be further expanded, Leica also explicitly mentions the Leitz Phone, the development of which is to be continued. The current Leitz Phone 2 is technically based on the Sharp Aquos R7, but is marketed and sold by Leica. This at least suggests that further models are being developed and will be delivered outside of Japan in the future.
