With the Summilux-M 1:1.4/35, Leica has introduced a strictly limited-edition wide-angle lens that adopts a design from 1961 and is extremely compact, even by today's standards. Leica is only producing 200 units of the lens, and buyers can choose between a black and a silver finish.

The latest limited edition version of the Leica Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 is based on the lens of the same name from 1961, which was the fastest wide-angle lens in the world at the time of its launch. The lens is available in either black or silver, whereby the black variant, like the original, has an adapted focus scale and a button for locking the focus ring (made of lacquered brass), so that it develops a patina after heavy use.

According to Leica's press release, the imaging performance corresponds to the original, and the rather simple design with seven lenses in five groups without aspherical surfaces or modern high-tech glass no longer really fits into today's world. As a result, the lens is less sharp and has less contrast than the current Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 ASPH., but is intended to capture photos with a vintage look.

The older design does have one advantage: with a length of just 2.6 centimeters and a weight of 200 grams, the lens is extremely compact, even compared to modern, fast full-frame lenses. The latest Summilux is 4.6 centimeters long and weighs 320 grams, while the Sony 35 mm f/1.4 GM measures 9.6 centimeters and weighs 524 grams.

Price and availability

The Leica Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 is now available from selected Leica dealers at a recommended retail price of $10,495, including VAT. The lens will be produced in a strictly limited edition of just 200 units. For comparison: the technically much more modern Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 ASPH. is available for $5395.
