Leaked Facebook smartwatch image reveals potential Apple Watch Series 8 competitor with a display notch for a camera
Facebook, which has just changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms, Inc., has been associated with the development of a smartwatch for some time now. Only recently, there were reports that a Facebook smartwatch would have a detachable case unit and come with camera equipment. An image of a Facebook smartwatch (see below) has now been shared by Bloomberg, and it shows a couple of surprising revelations.
Firstly, the overall look of the smartwatch implies that Facebook/Meta is going after the Apple end of the market. If the smartwatch gets a rumored 2022 release, it could end up facing the Apple Watch Series 8 devices, so it would need one or two extra functions to help it stand out of the crowd and appeal to smartwatch buyers. It’s believed the Facebook smartwatch will get at least a heart-rate tracker, and it should be expected that full WhatsApp support is onboard considering the messenger service is owned by the same company.
Secondly, the smartwatch image shows a notch in the bottom-center of the display that is clearly for a front-facing camera. Combined with the supposed detachable straps, this could turn the Facebook smartwatch into a miniature communication device that is ideal for quick video calls and on-the-go snapshots. Implementing such a feature, regardless of the notch-related brouhaha that will likely go along with it, would certainly help Facebook/Meta Platforms, Inc. make sure its brand-new smartwatch stood out from the increasingly crowded wearable space.
