Leak: Affordable Philips Hue Play Sync Box Lite syncs lighting with 4K TVs
The Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 8K ($316 on Amazon) will apparently be joined very soon by a more affordable sibling model, as the British retailer Very is already listing this new Hue Play Sync Box Lite for £109.99 ($149). The basic functionality of both products is the same.
Just like the 8K model, the Philips Hue Play Sync Box Lite allows you to synchronize the color and brightness of any Philips Hue lights in your living room with the TV’s screen content. For example, if a sunset over the ocean is shown on the smart TV, lamps near the floor glow in deep blue, while wall and ceiling lamps radiate the orange and red hues of the sun.
The image of the packaging confirms that the Hue Play Sync Box Lite supports 4K resolution after all. Since 8K TVs are still a rarity, the downgrade from 8K to 4K is hardly relevant for many customers. However, there is one downgrade that is likely to be far more significant for most customers – the more affordable Hue Play Sync Box Lite has only a single HDMI input, instead of the four ports found on the 8K model.
This means users can connect only one device, such as an Apple TV 4K or a PlayStation 5, to the box. If you want to sync the lights with another device, you’ll have to switch the cable. Gaming enthusiasts should also note that the Sync Box Lite only supports 4K content at a maximum of 60 frames per second, while 1,080p content can be displayed at 120 Hz. Since the new Sync Box is already listed at a retailer, the launch is likely scheduled for the next few days.
