With the Signature Slim Solar+ K980, Logitech has unveiled a new keyboard that is charged by built-in solar cells, which even work with artificial light with at least 200 lux. Once the integrated battery is fully charged, the keyboard can be used for up to four months in complete darkness.
According to Logitech, the keyboard has a lifespan of ten years under normal office lighting conditions before the battery reaches the end of its life. The battery can then be replaced by the user, and replacement parts will be sold through iFixit in the future. It is fairly unusual that Logitech has completely omitted a USB-C port, so it is not possible to charge the keyboard via cable or to use it as a wired keyboard. Computers can be connected via Bluetooth or the Logi Bolt USB receiver, which has to be bough separately.
Each switch of the membrane keyboard has a lifespan of ten million keystrokes. The Logitech keyboard is compatible with both Windows and macOS, symbols for both operating systems are included. To see if there is enough light to charge the keyboard, users have to use the accompanying Logitech Options Plus app, which can configure many keys.
