The Asus ROG Phone has arguably been the benchmark for Android gaming-focused powerhouses since the debut of its series in 2018. Therefore, it will see its fourth generation in 2021. Despite this, the OEM has confirmed rumors that it will be called the 5 rather than the 4.

Asus is projected to launch a successor for its ROG Phone 3 soon. However, these leaks also assert that this generation will skip the 4 in its product name and head straight on to 5. The OEM has now affirmed these rumors via its official Weibo account for these Android gaming devices.

It has let the fact that the 2021 ROG Phone will indeed be the 5 slip in the course of informing fans that it is also continuing its partnership with Tencent for the same year. Therefore, this would be the third generation of these devices to feature SKUs with this branding.

Otherwise, the ROG Phone 5 series is of course predicted to exhibit the most powerful specs available to Android this year, the Snapdragon 888 included. Moreover, it is expected to have a re-designed rear panel complete with a miniature secondary display that is widely anticipated as a homage to the Zephyrus G14's AniMe Matrix lids.

Furthermore, 2 distinct variants of the ROG Phone 5 - the ASUS_I005DA and I005DB - have reportedly been dug up online. Therefore, 1 of these might be either a more cost-effective version without this 'mobile AniMe' going on, or, more simply, the Tencent Edition that might end up exclusive to the Chinese market.
