Incredibly-low Ryzen 9 7950X3D gaming power consumption appears to leave the Core i9-13900K/KS in the dust
As leaked earlier, reviews for the Ryzen 9 7950X3D went live yesterday. The processor managed to take the gaming performance crown from Intel per several publications. For instance, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D proved to be 4% and 3% faster than the Core i9-13900K and the Core i9-13900KS respectively according to ComputerBase. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D’s gaming performance uplift over the competing Raptor Lake parts may seem small, but when we look at the power consumption figures of AMD’s latest X3D flagship, these gains become significantly more impactful.
Per figures calculated by ComputerBase, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D consumes an average of 72 W across the 14 games tested. The Max average power consumption of the chip stood at 78 W. The CPU used the most power in Forspoken at 89 W. In fact, in all the games that ComputerBase put the chip through, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D never touched 100 W.
On the other hand, the Core i9-13900K consumed 141 W on average while the Max average clocked in at 148 W. The Core i9-13900KS was even worse with average and Max power consumption figures of 147 and 156 W respectively. In other words, the power usage numbers posted by the Core i9-13900K/KS are almost twice as much as the Ryzen 7 7950X3D according to ComputerBase.
Finally, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D is also significantly more efficient than the non-3D Ryzen 9 7950X (72 vs 105 W average) while matching the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
Long story short, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D appears to be an incredibly efficient CPU. ComputerBase reports that the AMD CPU is able to output more than 2x as many FPS per W vs the Core i9-13900KS putting the Ryzen 9 7950X3D leagues ahead of the Intel Raptor Lake champion.
