Ahead of its August 5 unveiling, Huawei is teasing the MateBook Pro S with two bold claims: a significant weight advantage over Apple's MacBook Air M5 and a big jump in video playback time thanks to new battery chemistry.

Huawei is teasing the MateBook Pro S ahead of its August 5 unveiling. At 798 g, the 14-inch notebook undercuts Apple's 13.6-inch MacBook Air M5 (1,230 g) by roughly 35%, despite being similarly thin at 11.2 mm versus 11.3 mm. A new high-silicon battery is also claimed to extend video playback to 18 hours, compared with 12 hours for the Air.

Huawei's slide, claiming massive battery gap between the 2 laptop

The battery is pitched as the industry's first ultrabook battery with a 10% high-silicon anode, offering a claimed 15% higher energy density and 10% lower weight than a conventional cell of equal capacity. The 798 g figure matches an earlier Weibo leak, along with the magnesium-lithium alloy build we reported previously.

Still, Huawei has not disclosed the battery capacity in Wh or confirmed details of the Kirin XE90 chipset. Moreover, the 18-hour figure applies to video playback rather than general use, so real-world battery life may vary.
