The news for Huawei seems to be getting worse by the day, as if that was even possible. In the latest blow to the company, the SD Association has blocked the ability for Huawei to offer phones or devices featuring SD or microSD card slot.

No matter which way Huawei turns at the moment it appears every conceivable door is being shut on the embattled Chinese company following its US trade ban. It has already suffered through the loss of its officially supported Google Android license and had its access to Qualcomm, Intel, and Broadcom chips cut off while also losing its ARM chip architecture license too. Now, the SD Association has also cut off its rights to fit devices with SD or microSD card slots.

While it isn’t quite the hammer blow that losing access to the aforementioned technologies as it already has a proprietary alternative to SD cards in the form of its NM cards, it closes off the ability to use the more widely supported format in both its smartphones and laptop designs. At this point, however, losing SD Association membership is probably the least of its concerns. Apple doesn’t even bother with SD card support on its latest MacBooks so Huawei probably has bigger fish to fry.

While it can work around problems like an SD card ban, working around a ban on software like the official versions of Android and Windows while also without access to ARM RISC and Intel x86 chip architecture are seemingly fatal blows. Although Huawei has an alternative to Android in the form of HongMeng OS and could even ship computers with Linux on board, it is going to take years to develop an in-house chip design. Unless, it has been working on a plan B of which we aren’t aware.
