Huawei MateBook D 15, i7-7500U 940MX
The Huawei MateBook D is not the most exciting product in Huawei's first laptop range, but it may be suitable as your next computing device with a solidly built design and lots of impressive specs. Despite Huawei's apparent business aspirations, most users will likely compare the MateBook D to other, similar laptops like the Asus VivoBook S15, the HP Envy 15 or even the pricier, but significantly more upscale and powerful Dell XPS 15. The design of the MateBook D is best described as lackluster, as this looks much like any other business-focused laptop used over the past few years. The build quality is very good: gaps are even and the base unit resists twisting quite well with only minor creaks. The display lid twists more readily, but even pushing down hard on the back has no effect whatsoever and the picture remains free of discolorations or ripples. It is heavy at 1.9 kg but does have an attractive top cover. When a user opens it up, he can see the 15.6-inch Full HD display and the keyboard just down below. The MateBook D comes with a matte Full HD IPS panel. At an average of about 260 nits, the BOE panel features similar brightness as the LG panel Asus uses for the VivoBook S15. The display on the Huawei MateBook D looks good, but will not impress as much as the MateBook X with its QHD resolution. Here a user is only getting 142 ppi, but it should provide improved battery life. In terms of processing power, a user will have the choice of either the Core i5 or i7 seventh-generation processors from Intel. The MateBook D features a discrete Nvidia GeForce 940MX in addition to the integrated Intel HD 620. Then there are a variety of RAM options. It gets a little complicated here, but these options range from 4 GB of RAM with 500 GB of storage, which is the cheapest model, up to 16 GB of RAM with 128 GB of SSD storage and 1 TB of HDD storage. System performance is decent. Perceived performance is great with no lags thanks to the primary SSD. Booting is particularly swift at only about 10 seconds from a cold start to the Windows desktop. Huawei has partnered with Dolby to ensure the design of the laptop is ideal for viewing video content. In addition, a few software tweaks should make it more efficient. It means the speakers are in better places for watching movies, as well as having a slightly less reflective screen. One of the benefits of the MateBook D is the number of connectivity ports on offer. There is a DC-in jack, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, two USB 3.0 ports, and a USB 2.0 port, as well as an HDMI port. Wallet-friendly mainstream..business? Huawei's 15.6-inch mainstream laptop surely looks the part, but while the build quality is good and the overall performance decent, the MateBook D suffers from a few significant shortcomings.

It remains to be seen if Huawei will be bringing its laptops to Malaysia, but for a first try, the company seems to be off to an encouraging start with the MateBook D.

I'm not entirely convinced by the MateBook D. It's too big, and too generic, to really impress. A MacBook Pro is thinner, more powerful, and (I think) better looking.

Old book, new page. Huawei's all-aluminum 15.6-inch MateBook D gets Kaby Lake-R hardware and GeForce MX150 graphics. How does the multimedia notebook compare to its otherwise identical predecessor and did Huawei do enough to differentiate the MateBook D from the stiff competition in this segment?

Huawei MateBook D 15 2018 53010BRU
I think we are all aware that Huawei is originally a smartphone manufacturer. But a few years ago they started with manufacturing of laptops, just because they saw an opportunity. In my opinion, they delivered what they wanted too. The MateBook D is in the high mid-range compared to the higher MateBook X Pro laptops. It can be considered as a multimedia device too, as it is equipped with entry level dedicated MX150 GPU. Together with Intel 8th generation i5-8250U, casual gaming is also possible. Of course it has its own drawbacks too. For instance, if there were an SSD installed, it would be great, but unfortunately there is only a conventional 1 TB HDD and it is a slow one. Of course you can always change it. A free M.2 slot is there, only if you screw the whole base unit to reach it. Its matte IPS panel is satisfactory, but don’t expect much in terms of brightness. Connectivity wise, there is nothing much. 2 USB 3, 1 USB 2 and an HDMI. A USB Type-C would be nice, but nope. With this package, is it future proof? Absolutely not. It is missing all modern connections. But at least GPU and CPU will stay relevant for maybe next 2-3 years. I suggest you to have an SSD installed as well. In order to not void warranty, go to a service point if there are any in your country. So, should you purchase this laptop? Depending on your budget it can be a good choice. Its price starts from 700 Euros at the time or writing. If there was an SSD, it would be a no miss. But even with its current form at 1.9 kg and 16.9 mm thickness, it is still considerable. If you think this device for day to day office tasks, some multimedia and very light gaming, go ahead. But other than that, I wouldn't suggest it. The HDD really kills the potential here. The other aspect to consider is the form factor. Sure, you can find other devices in this price range with an SSD installed, but they will be most likely made out of plastic, thicker and heavier. You need to pick between form and performance. Considering that you can have an SSD installed later on, you should think of your way of usage. If it is going to sit all day on your desktop and wont be a real mobile companion, then you might consider other options. But if it will be your mobile device, carrying around all day long, definitely have an SSD. It will have a huge impact in overall performance. Shortly, if you are considering this device without having an SSD installed, don't buy it. You might end up complaining to yourself all the time about why your MateBook is slow. Huawei Matebook D 15-53010FDQ
Huawei hasn’t been present in the computer category for a long time but it is now one of the big players in the laptop scene. It tends to offer laptops with good specs and sleek look at an affordable price compared to its competitors such as Dell and HP. Huawei definitely didn’t cut corners in the build quality. The laptop’s entire shell and interior is made of aluminum. The interior doesn’t feel as strong as some of the premium laptops especially the panel around the keyboard and the screen panel tends to flex slightly with pressure. Coupled with a hard hinge, opening the lid requires two hands. However, these are just some minor issues considering the price of this laptop. In this price range, it is still one of the best. The outer part of the lid has a very clean design with just the “HUAWEI” word on it. The same accent is carried to the sides. The edges are rounded and almost all the IO, which consists of two USB-A port, a full-size HDMI port, the DC power cable connector and a headphone jack are placed on the left side. On the right is a single USB-A port. There is no USB-C or a card reader in this laptop. Despite all this, the MateBook D feels expensive and more than its price range. This alone is compelling enough reason to get it. As for the specs, the MateBook D 15-53010FDQ comes with an Intel KabyLake Core i5 -8250 CPU coupled with an Intel UHD 620 for very light gaming. It is shipped with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 256 GB of M2 SATA SSD. As for the connectivity, the laptop is equipped with Wireless AS and Bluetooth 4.1. This is quite odd as even budget phones have started adapting Bluetooth 5. Another bug disadvantage is the lack of lighting for the keyboard. The speakers are also rather weak. As for the display, the MateBook D 15 comes with a matte 15.6-inch Full-HD screen. Early reviews have rated this display as moderately good and enough for the regular daily usage in a office. The brightness is on the lower side, but definitely very useful. The MateBook D 15-53010FDQ only features a 42 Wh, 65 W charger but this isn’t all that bad for that screen resolution. The keyboard is comfortable for typing but Huawei has made quite a few mistakes in this area. The keys are actually small for a 15-inch laptop and they need to be pressed firmly for them to register properly. In short, the Huawei MateBook D is a great laptop for its price. At a very low price, one can get a good looking laptop with some very good specs. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The MateBook D 15 is still a competitive notebook in its class, even one year after its launch. It's not built on the latest hardware platform and lacks certain features, like a backlit keyboard or USB-C port, among others, but it checks most of the other traits regular buyers would expect from a compact and affordable all-day laptop: it's solidly built and lightweight, gets an IPS matte screen and decent speakers, performs well, runs cools and quiet, and lasts for a fair bit on a charge.

This is the MateBook D 15’s major compromise. The dullness is even noticeable when watching films. Battery life, at just under six hours in our video-playback test, is also disappointing. But the trade-off is a sleek and quick machine, and at this price that’s no disaster.

If you’re looking for a good-looking notebook that delivers the goods for not a lot of money, then the MateBook D15 is one of the best ones around. The HUAWEI MateBook D 15‘s HUAWEI Share feature is definitely a major selling point if you are using a HUAWEI smartphone, as it virtually eliminates the need for cables for transferring files between your phone and your laptop, which is something I do on a daily basis. If you don’t own a HUAWEI smartphone, it is still a pretty compelling package as its very portable for a 15.6″ laptop, although there are some drawbacks like non-upgradeable RAM, poor selection of I/O ports and a pretty basic display. For RM2499, it is pretty affordable, and it is almost possible to forgive some of the shortcomings, especially if you aren’t a heavy user. I would recommend the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 for students as its relatively inexpensive and definitely capable of some casual gaming, and if they use a HUAWEI smartphone, it makes their daily tasks even more convenient because students have a terrible habit of making groups in Whatsapp for discussions. Yes, you know who you are.

If there’s a phrase I’d use for the Huawei MateBook D 15, it’d be good enough. The display is good enough, the system’s performance is good enough to handle most workloads, there are a decent amount of ports, audio quality from the speakers is good enough, the webcam and mic are good enough for Skype calls. The battery life is also good enough for a 15.6-inch laptop.

I’d say, for the price of RM2,499, I think the Huawei MateBook D 15 is an easy recommendation for those who just want to use a laptop to get some simple tasks done. Just keep in mind that there is no way to upgrade the laptop other than storage.

The hardware isn’t that beefy, but then again the MateBook D isn’t meant for heavy graphical tasks – it’s a notebook for people who need to get work done.

On the endurance front, the MateBook D 15 proved to be serviceable if unremarkable with an active battery life of about 7 or so hours with balanced power settings before you need to find a charging point. On that front, the notebook’s usage of a 65W USB Type-C charger makes things logistically easier, especially if you have a smartphone of recent vintage as you can charge both with the same cable.

On that front, the MateBook D 15 eschews the traditional Intel and NVIDIA combo and instead integrates a mid-range AMD Ryzen 5 3500U mobile processor with integrated Radeon Vega 8 graphics, 8GB RAM and a dual storage combo that consists of a 256GB SSD and a 1TB hard disk. This setup puts it as a very capable midrange workhorse that can tackle a variety of tasks like paperwork, movies and basic gaming without undue trouble.

Huawei's MateBook D 15 office laptop convinces with a low price of 549 Euros, remains exceptionally quiet with high system performance, and offers a chic metal casing with a sufficiently bright matte IPS display. The keyboard and touchpad of the very portable 15.6-inch notebook are also convincing, but the fast LPDDR4X RAM is not expandable.

Huawei hasn’t taken any massive leaps forward with the new D15, but the small steps it has taken are sufficient to keep it very near the top of our recommended list of affordable laptops for another year, even if the price has gone up and the display hasn’t been given the upgrade it sorely needed. The odd niggle remains, of course, like the ludicrous positioning of the webcam and the lack of any form of keyboard backlighting, but taken in the round the MateBook D15 is still a solid, smart, competent machine at a good price. What’s the word I’m looking for? Oh, yes: decent.

All in all, the Huawei Matebook D 15 is an all-around decent laptop but not worth the price it carries in Nepal. Another issue is the sparse availability and aftermarket service. It will be considerably difficult to find parts for Huawei laptops compared to ones from established players like Dell and Asus. The closest competition to the Huawei Matebook D15 is another Macbook-like laptop, the Mi Notebook Pro. It costs exactly the same but blows the D15 out of the water. First and foremost, the 2.5K display on the Notebook Pro has much better color reproduction as well as a 16:10 aspect ratio. Secondly, it is powered by an 11th-gen H-series processor, which is a mild improvement compared to the G7 on the Matebook D15. Finally, the conventional camera placement also makes it ideal for video conferences. Almost forgot; it also supports Thunderbolt 4. The Huawei Matebook D15 would have been feasible if the price aligned with its global pricing. But for now, it is just another Windows laptop in a Mac-like shell that cannot keep up with what other companies offer in this range.

The Intel version of the Huawei MateBook D 15 is a good budget offer. The laptop has a good-looking sleek design, it has a thin profile and it’s light at the same time. So, portability is one of its key selling points. You don’t have to worry when you are away from the charger – the small battery unit can last for 10 hours of Web browsing which is a great score for this 42Wh unit (actually, even better compared to the AMD sibling). In addition, the notebook has a compact USB-C charger which is great – if you have bigger pockets it’ll fit there with ease. The Intel Core i5-1135G7 (which is one of the available CPU variants) and its iGPU are good enough for some light games as well – CS:GO and Dota 2 can run just fine on (at least) Low settings.

If you’re looking at Huawei’s 2021 laptop lineup powered by the 11th-Gen Intel processor, the MateBook D 15 2021 is the most affordable you can get right now at PHP 52,999. However, if you want a sharper screen and a bigger battery, you’ll have to shell out more for the MateBook 14 2021 for PHP 64,999.

Huawei’s newly refreshed MateBook 15 2021 is a mixed bag. It has many of the same things that made the previous generation great, but the switch to Intel’s 11th generation chips feels like a lateral move, especially considering Huawei’s other offerings in the same space. The MateBook 14 (2020) for example, offers a better-performing CPU that delivers slightly worse GPU performance but better metrics across the board, including double the battery life. Sure you’re getting a slightly smaller display, but the 14-inch panel is sharper and is more color-accurate. It’s also a few thousand pesos cheaper than the MateBook D15 2021, making it a better buy all-around.

Huawei has upgraded its MateBook D 15 to a fast AMD Ryzen 5000 processor. However, the low price of 569 Euros (~$600) comes at the expense of image quality and connectivity in particular.

With the MateBook D 15 (2022), Huawei is offering a premium and compact 15.6-inch, office laptop with a MacBook-style design. With 16 GB of RAM, low emissions despite high-level system performance and long battery life, plenty of qualities are on offer. However, in terms of connectivity and display it becomes clear we are dealing with a budget laptop, therefore, the price is crucial.
