The ace up the 2024 Huawei MateBook 14’s sleeve is the value it offers. Given the quality of the display and speaker system and the performance of the Core Ultra CPU, the asking price of £1,000 is a pittance. I’d argue that the model built around the 14-core Core Ultra 5 125H CPU is even better value at just £750. Both are well-made and stylish premium laptops at mid-range price points and, as such, can be strongly recommended. If either model sounds like your cup of tea, though, I’d suggest buying it sooner rather than later because it’s likely that Huawei is quickly chewing through the pile of CPUs it purchased before the US withdrew the supply licences for the Core Ultra chips back in May 2024. Once they are gone, it may be a case of arrivederci to the entire MateBook range. It will be sorely missed.

Besides the above, the HUAWEI Matebook 14 packs a sizable 70Wh battery, which boasts up to 19 hours of 1080p video playback time. The laptop also supports various fast charging protocols like PD, UFCS and HUAWEI SuperCharge, allowing it to quickly recharge when you're on the go. It even supports 40W reverse charging, so you can use it to charge your mobile devices.

The improved MateBook 14 2024 builds on a proven design and upgrades it with the latest Intel Core Ultra processor and Intel Arc graphics, a larger battery and a sharper OLED display making it a high-performing workhorse that can tackle everyday computing tasks and even a spot of light gaming too

Intel’s Core Ultra CPUs are finding homes in plenty of slim, light laptops right now. The Huawei MateBook 14 stands out from most, and not just because of that distinctive mint green finish. The OLED display looks gorgeous, connectivity is rather good, and it’s absolutely not short on performance. Pricing puts it directly in the MacBook Air’s firing line, until you realise Apple wants an extra £400 to match the Huawei’s memory and storage capacity. I also think it’s a nicer built machine than the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, which can be had for similar money – though that machine doesn’t have to contend with any trade embargoes.

The Huawei MateBook 14 (2024) represents fantastic value for money, with £1199 bagging you 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. For the equivalent specs on the latest MacBook Air, you’ll need to pay at least £1699 which is a huge £500 difference. You also get a couple of extras such as an OLED touchscreen and a wider selection of ports. Battery life may not be quite as good as the MacBook Air, but it’s still perfectly reasonable here with our tests indicating 10-hour stamina. The Huawei MateBook 14 (2024) doesn’t necessarily excel in one specific area, but it’s a fantastic all-rounder productivity machine for your money. And that’s the story of the Huawei MateBook 14 — a solid laptop and nothing more. After the joie de vivre felt with the MateBook X Pro, I can’t help but feel a little let down by how much of a MacBook Pro me-too the design is. If you can look past that (and that touchpad sponge), this is a good all-rounder for working by day and play/binge watching by night. Especially with the marvel of that OLED display.

The Huawei Matebook 14 (2024) may not be as eye-catching as its new Matebook X Pro sibling, but it looks to me like the better value laptop. An Intel-flavoured performance boost, OLED screen upgrade and the embrace of a more stylish and slender design all help the Matebook 14 become a serious threat to its ultrabook rivals. The MacBook Air is the obvious key competitor, but Huawei actually trumps it in several areas thanks to the OLED panel, 120Hz refresh rate and touchscreen support. And with Huawei suggesting that a configuration with 16GB of RAM and 1TB storage will be made available for just £1199, it could represent outstanding value too. Of course, I’ll need to test the performance and battery claims to make sure the Huawei Matebook 14 (2024) lives up to its billing, but it’s certainly one worth keeping an eye out for, and could be a serious challenger in our Best Laptop and Best Ultrabook rankings.

Intel’s Core Ultra CPUs are finding homes in plenty of slim, light laptops right now. The Huawei MateBook 14 stands out from most, and not just because of that distinctive mint green finish. The OLED display looked gorgeous during my brief demo, and there’s a decent selection of ports at the sides. Pricing puts it directly in the MacBook Air’s firing line, until you realise Apple wants an extra £400 to match the Huawei’s memory and storage capacity. Performance and battery life comparisons will have to wait for a full review, and even the firm’s own estimates suggest the MacBook will stay ahead on longevity – but I can’t deny you’re getting an awful lot of laptop for your money here.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
