Reviews for the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G

Archive.org versionThe Mate 20 X 5G is a strange beast. On the one hand, it’s the perfect streaming and gaming device, poised to take advantage of fast data speeds thanks to its huge screen and ample power. On the other, the 4G version packs a bigger battery and costs half the price in the UK. So while in isolation it’s a great phone, until 5G coverage improves, or its price goes down, it is a tough sell at £999.

Archive.org versionIf you’re not fussed about 5G you can just get the significantly cheaper standard Mate 20 X which has all the aforementioned but 5G. At the time of writing it was retailing for £499.95 at John Lewis.

Archive.org versionIf you're looking for a two-handed mega-sized phone then the Mate 20 X is a genuinely fantastic media powerhouse. It has a great (and, yes, massive) screen, further enhanced by great audio, and the battery just goes on and on whatever you throw at it.

Archive.org versionPick it up at the right price and you’ll have a brilliant monster of a smartphone on your hands - though you might have to wait a few months before you can really take advantage of its lightning fast 5G.

Archive.org versionAlthough it's easy to get ahead of ourselves, this 5G ready beast isn't as feature-loaded as Samsung's Galaxy S10, or as super as the P30 Pro - really, its biggest plus point is being 5G enabled and we're still waiting on the 5G switch to be flicked. Interestingly, Huawei hasn't chosen its top products to fit with 5G - the Mate X will be a 5G phone, but we don't know when that's coming and the P30 and Pro were both 4G, which does feel like Huawei is playing it cautiously.
