Hogwarts Legacy is approaching its third anniversary, and a sequel is already in development. Even so, there are likely many Potter fans who have yet to embark on their own Hogwarts adventure. The best opportunity so far was a free giveaway on the Epic Games Store in late November. For those who missed out, the magical open-world RPG set in the Harry Potter universe is now available on Steam with a 90% discount. Developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games, the title currently costs just $6 – its lowest price to date, according to SteamDB. The offer runs until January 5, 2026.
As many players will already know, Hogwarts Legacy transports you to the wizarding world of the 19th century. The story revolves around ancient magic and a power-hungry goblin determined to claim it. Much like the films, the main narrative is closely interwoven with everyday life at Hogwarts. Players attend magic classes, explore the castle, duel other wizards, and form new friendships. The game also performs well on handheld PCs: according to Steam, Hogwarts Legacy is rated “Verified” for the Steam Deck (available for $470 on Amazon).
In its review, German gaming magazine GamePro awarded Hogwarts Legacy an impressive score of 89 out of 100. One of the game’s standout features is its well-designed action combat system, which blends a wide range of spells with mechanics such as blocking and dodging. The reviewers also praised the richly detailed recreation of the Harry Potter universe. Hogwarts itself, along with the nearby village of Hogsmeade, is highlighted in particular, brought to life with moving staircases, talking portraits, and countless magical details fans will recognize from the films.
Both GamePro and the roughly 350,000 user reviews on Steam – 90% of which are positive – identify technical issues as the game’s main weakness. While performance has improved since its launch in February 2023, some problems reportedly persist. The story is generally well received, although some players feel it lacks emotional depth. Still, at $6 instead of the usual $60, fans of the wizarding world are likely to find plenty to enjoy.
