Set in a somber atmosphere, the story follows a distant family reuniting in their old home after their grandmother’s death, where lingering memories intertwine with hidden secrets and subtle supernatural events. The minimalist pixel art presentation further enhances the mood.
Players explore the sprawling house from the perspective of the feline protagonist, observing conversations and subtly influencing events. Aspen can open doors, jump onto furniture, and reach specific spots to trigger new dialogue. The gameplay focuses primarily on narrative choices rather than puzzles, though occasional action sequences have you chasing mice or dodging falling objects.
According to reviewers at Adventure Game Hotspot, the cat-centric gameplay feels unconventional but entertaining. The puzzles, built around feline logic – like meowing to open doors – are highlighted as a charming touch. Criticism is aimed at the arcade-style segments, which can become frustrating due to mandatory repetition after failure.
Still, the main focus clearly remains on the story, which the magazine describes as dark and gripping. The game takes around seven hours to complete. Due to a few minor issues – such as the lack of a manual save option and occasionally rushed dialogue – it received a score of 78 out of 100. On Steam, Cats and the Other Lives currently has around 2,500 user reviews, 86% of which are positive.

Cats and the Other Lives launched in November 2022 and usually sells for around $20 on Steam. Previous sales have offered discounts of up to 80%, but until January 5 the game is available at 85% off, dropping the price below $3 for the first time, according to SteamDB. There’s also good news for handheld players – the title is rated “Playable” on the Steam Deck (available fpr $470 on Amazon), making it a solid option for portable gaming.
