Highly-rated shooter is free on Steam but only for a short time

Half-Life 2 was released on November 16, 2004 and is considered by many to be one of the greatest milestones in the shooter genre. To mark its 20th anniversary, Valve is giving away the cult classic, typically priced at $10 on Steam, completely free - but only until November 18 at 7 PM (CET).

Half-Life 2 puts players in the role of the fan-favorite scientist Gordon Freeman. In the first game, the theoretical physicist faced the alien Nihilanth, while in the sequel, he awakens from stasis years later to find a future dominated by the advanced interdimensional force known as the Combine.

When it comes to gameplay, Half-Life 2 revolutionized its era with the introduction of the Source Engine and innovative physics-based mechanics. The seamless integration of physics puzzles was especially groundbreaking, challenging players to stack objects or manipulate weights to trigger bridges, platforms, and more.

A central element of the gameplay is the gravity gun, which makes it possible to manipulate almost any object in the game world. In addition, Half-Life 2 is known among fans for its excellent balance of intense shooter action, quiet exploration and exciting moments.

By the way, the latest offshoot of the Half-Life series is Half-Life-Alyx. With Project Borealis, a sequel to Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is already in the works. However, the game does not come directly from Valve, but is being developed by Icebreaker.
