Like the HP Dragonfly or Spectre series, the EliteBook x360 1040 G7 is one of the sleekest laptops for its size and category. Internally, however, the old Intel 10th gen Comet Lake-U processor is holding back the system from performing as well as most of the latest Ultrabooks in the market.

But without question, the biggest hurdle I face with recommending the EliteBook 1040 G7 is the pricing. This thing is crazy-expensive. If you want a decent config, you'll spend $2,000 and if you get the one you really want, be ready to shell out $3,000. Now, if you're a Fortune 500 company looking to equip its workforce with a head-turning business notebook that performs as good as it looks, then start massaging those budgets to buy a fleet of these.

It competes in an exceptionally crowded market, however, which means that its few drawbacks draw outsize attention. Although its list price isn't necessarily higher than that of a comparable Latitude or ThinkPad convertible, it's still painful when you consider that you can get an equivalent consumer-focused 2-in-1, minus vPro and a few frills, for nearly $1,000 less. The persistent fan noise is also a slight mark against. Nevertheless, the EliteBook x360 1040 G7 occupies a firm perch among the better business convertibles you can buy.

The last time I reviewed an EliteBook x360 1040, I said that it was nearly perfect. It still is. I do have one new complaint, which is that by now, we should all be using USB 3.2 Gen 2 and HDMI 2.0. There really isn't an excuse for USB 3.2 Gen 1 anymore, especially on the premium tier. I'd also love to see some of the color options that we have on HP's consumer laptops.

HP’s latest attempt is something called Presence Aware on the EliteBook 1040, which lets the machine know when you’re in front of it and dim the screen when you leave or wake up when you return. There’s also a new AI noise reduction tool to make your voice sound clearer on calls.

Now, we have to be fair – the EliteBook x360 1040 G8 is not a cheap laptop. You need to sacrifice a good amount of your budget in order to get your hands on one. However, the premium you pay does not come without coverage since you get a ton of features, that you might never even use. Not only do you get an HP Active Pen inside the box, but there is an NFC coil for quick pairing with a mobile device or wireless Smart Card. Also, most of the bezel above the display is put to good use as it holds a bunch of sensors. This includes an ambient light sensor, a proximity one (that detects your presence and logs in and out of the notebook with the help of the IR sensor.

The HP Elite x360 1040 G10 left us with many positive impressions. The magnesium chassis is rigid, and the input devices are comfortable. The Sunon cooling fan is quiet even when the processor is stressed at max and in this scenario, the keyboard doesn’t feel too hot to the touch. In short, the comfort under load is very good. The fan is quiet but the CPU clocks under load are high which sounds great for a light and compact notebook with transforming capabilities. The NVMe of our device is decently snappy and it doesn’t get toasty during benchmarking. This reminds us that you get just one M.2 slot for storage and the memory is soldered but the maximum amount of 32GB LPDDR5 should be enough for most users. The 1200p IPS display (AUO AUO2BAB) is a good choice for work or entertainment.

The HP Elite 1000 family is lauded for its portability and auxiliary features that business users can appreciate. The latest Elite x360 1040 G11 continues the trend, but a bigger cooling solution probably wouldn't hurt to keep those core temperatures down.

The HP Elitebook x360 is easy to recommend for business users, particularly those who can buy the laptop in bulk, as it's fairly pricey at a starting rate of $2,029. My review unit costs $2,299. Again, this is not meant for the everyday consumer, but I recommend it to enterprising users and folks who want a durable, secure, and reliable laptop for work. For more traditional users, I'd recommend the Acer Swift 14, which fields a similar display size, battery life, and performance but at a more affordable price.

The HP Elite x360 1040 G11 is a portable and well-built 14-inch 2-in-1 device with punchy CPU options and a modern port selection with two full-function Thunderbolt 4 connectors. The machine that we bought has a Core Ultra 7 155H, 32GB LPDDR5x RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It feels super responsive for normal work. The 28W chip is also suitable for more heavy tasks such as 3D rendering. The processor sustains a 2.12 GHz / 1.82 GHz P and E core clocks in long stress which is a solid result for a light machine with transforming capabilities. In this scenario, the pair of fans doesn’t sound loud and the keyboard doesn’t get too toasty. The 1200p IPS display (BOE0C52) is pretty good. It’s a PWM-free unit with 94% sRGB coverage.

While Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm Arm chips are gaining plenty of attention, there are compelling reasons to stick with the traditional approach. We await the killer app for AI on laptops, and Intel’s Core Ultra chips remain better all-rounders: the x86 architecture is still king on Windows and Intel’s Arc graphics are far more accomplished than anything Qualcomm can offer. Despite my words of praise for Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14s, there are good reasons for business buyers to remain cautious and stick with a traditional approach. Chief among them is compatibility, as the last thing a business wants to do is a mass roll-out of laptops that are incompatible with key software or the office printer.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
