Google puts Gemini on the phone: AI handles calls for questions and reservations

Until now, Gemini could initiate calls, but users still had to handle the actual conversation themselves. With the new “Call for me” feature, the AI assistant is now set to take care of that as well. Google announced the gradual rollout on November 24, 2026, in a post on the official Pixel Community. The new feature should not be confused with Google’s existing “Agentic Calling.” Google has been able to use that feature to call businesses since 2025. So far, however, it has only worked for certain requests made through Google Search or AI Mode, such as checking product availability, rather than freely formulated calling tasks directly in the Gemini app.

With the Call for me feature, Gemini is expected to be able to check product availability, request quotes, make reservations, navigate phone menus and wait on hold, among other things. Google lists these examples on its official support page. In principle, however, the new AI calling feature appears to be usable for any phone call that is not included on the list of excluded call types. For example, Gemini is not allowed to make emergency calls or marketing calls, nor can it complete payments. Credit card numbers, passwords and health information must not be shared either.

Gemini identifies itself as an AI and records the call

Before the call, the app shows which number will be dialed and what information Gemini is supposed to provide or request during the conversation. Once users confirm this, Gemini picks up the virtual phone. At the beginning of the conversation, Gemini introduces itself to the person being called as the user’s AI assistant and informs them that the call is being recorded. Users can follow the conversation through a live transcript or listen in. They are also supposed to be able to take over the call themselves at any time.

After the call, Gemini provides a summary, while the transcript and recording are said to be accessible in the Phone app. According to Google, transcripts are stored on the company’s own servers, while audio recordings are stored only on the device. Neither is supposed to be used to train its AI models. It remains to be seen how people on the receiving end will react to such calls. Especially at first, businesses may refuse to speak with an AI or ask to speak directly with the user.

Launching on Pixel 11 – initially only in the US

Google is gradually rolling out “Call for me” as an early preview. The feature requires a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, a Google AI subscription, the public beta of the Phone app and English as the device language. Users must be at least 18 years old and located in the US. Gemini can currently only call US phone numbers. Google also mentions a daily call limit but does not specify the exact number. It is not yet known when or whether the feature will become available in other countries.
