Good battery life, great camera—why does hardly anyone know about this mid-range phone?

Oppo is making a big splash, especially with its flagship phones in the Find X series: time and again, there are spectacular camera setups supported by Hasselblad, attachable lens kits for the camera, or exceptionally long battery life.

The Oppo Reno series has a visibility problem

Oppo’s mid-range series, on the other hand, is often overlooked—which is a shame, because the Reno series definitely offers some interesting models. For example, we recently reviewed the Oppo Reno 16 FS, which is available on amazon.com, among other dealers. 

The price is at the upper end of the mid-range, but in return, the phone offers a camera system rarely seen in this price class: In addition to a good main camera, it also features a telephoto lens with 3.5x optical hybrid zoom, a wide-angle lens, and a high-resolution selfie camera that takes excellent self-portraits.

Plenty of storage and a bright display

Thanks to 512 GB of storage, you can save plenty of personal data, and there’s even a microSD card slot that lets you add even more storage space. By the way: If you’re wondering what the difference is between this and the Oppo Reno 16 F—the Reno 16 F simply has 256 GB of storage; otherwise, the devices are identical in design.

The display is bright enough for outdoor use, even though it doesn’t offer dedicated HDR support.

The battery life is impressive as well: In our Wi-Fi test, the phone’s 6,500-mAh battery delivered well over 23 hours of runtime. That’s easily enough for a relaxing day of streaming or a busy day at the office, without having to constantly worry about the battery level.

Long updates, but a slow processor

It’s also surprising that Oppo promises six years of software updates, meaning the phone offers a few more years of security compared to some other manufacturers.

However, the price would need to drop a bit more to make the Oppo Reno 16 FS a real bargain—the SoC and the slow Wi-Fi aren’t particularly impressive in this price range.
