Citizen's new titanium Promaster Sky Navihawks pair a 60-hour automatic with slide-rule bezel

Citizen is on a spree today — alongside its NJ0210-56E and two-tone automatics, it has also unveiled two new Promaster Sky Navihawk automatics — in Europe, for now. The NK0040-58L is equipped with a blue dial and the NK0044-57E a black one, and both are listed at €599.

Easily, the most interesting part is what the Japanese company leaves out with these two. The Navihawk name usually goes hand-in-hand with Citizen's Eco-Drive watches, with solar charging and radio time-setting. These two drop all of that and use a mechanical movement instead. It's Citizen's Caliber 8314, a brand-new automatic with 21 jewels, a 60-hour power reserve and a rated accuracy of -20 to +40 seconds a day.

The case is Super Titanium, Citizen's hardened titanium, and so is the bracelet. It measures 40 mm across and 13.3 mm thick, and the whole watch weighs about 100 g. That thickness is the major trade-off here, since Citizen's other automatics of this size are closer to 11 mm. The bezel is the reason why. It has a slide rule, with scales for fuel, distance and unit conversions. That's the aviation feature the Navihawk has always been built around.

Both dials use Arabic numerals with stick indices, and there's a date window at 3 o'clock. The crystal is sapphire with an anti-reflective coating, the case back screws down, and the bracelet closes with a double safety folding clasp at 20 mm. Water resistance is rated at 20 bar.

Availability is a little patchy at the moment, though. Citizen's German site shows the blue NK0040-58L as currently unavailable, with a notification button instead of a buy one. Dutch retailer WatchXL lists it at the same €599 with a two to four week wait. At that price, the pair is roughly $682 each.
