Google app now available globally – search and AI features come to Windows desktops

The Google desktop app provides quick access to Google’s search and AI features, so users no longer have to rely on a browser. It first launched in September 2025, but only as an experimental beta version available exclusively in the US. The full version is now ready and has been available worldwide since April 14. Google has already published a detailed help page, although it is not yet available in every language.
Once the Google app has been downloaded and installed, users can open a central search window with Alt + Space. It effectively serves as a hub for everything they may be looking for on their PC. The app searches not only the web, but also local files, installed apps and content from Google Drive. There is also an integrated AI mode. Entering a question into the search bar brings up a response from Gemini.
Another useful addition is the built-in Google Lens feature. It lets users highlight on-screen content, recognize text, pull up translations or search for images directly. In that sense, Google is bringing familiar smartphone features to the Windows desktop on a much larger screen. Users can also share a single window or their entire screen and then ask questions about whatever is currently being displayed. Anyone who wants to try the app can download it for free. The only requirements are a PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a minimum age of 13. While the app itself is currently available only in English, users can still ask questions in other languages.
