Google Pixel tablet to rely on Android 12L with optimisations for large displays
Rumours about Google releasing a Pixel-branded tablet have started again, with the so-called Pixel Tab originally tipped to launch in October. Since then, Google introduced Android 12L, a version of Android 12 optimised for foldables and tablets. Incidentally, Android 12L Beta 2 contains references to 'Google Pipit', thought to be the company's first foldable smartphone.
According to LetsGoDigital, Google continues to ramp up preparations for its tablet division, an area that it has historically overlooked. The website also believes that the Pixel Tab will be one of the first devices to showcase Android 12L, screenshots of which we have included below. Additionally, it has updated its Pixel Tab concept renders, which it claims to have based on a patent filing published in September.
In the meantime, Samsung is preparing to announce the Galaxy Tab S8 series, including the 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. As various leaks have shown, Samsung will market the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra as more of a laptop replacement than a dedicated tablet.
By contrast, the smaller Galaxy Tab S8 and Galaxy Tab S8+ will serve as tablets first, akin to the even smaller iPad mini 6. The Galaxy Tab S8 series will debut on February 9, likely three months before Google I/O 2022, where Google is also expected to reveal the Pixel 6a and Pixel Watch.
