A new wave of 360-degree action cameras is almost upon us after GoPro's rather lacklustre Max 2025 release earlier this year. On the one hand, GoPro has finally started teasing the Max 2 over a year after an image of the same device leaked online. On the other hand, DJI is widely expected to launch the Osmo 360 before the end of the month alongside its next-generation wireless microphone.
Unfortunately, GoPro has not revealed anything specific about the Max 2 yet and how it will depart from the existing Max 2025 (curr. $299 on Amazon). In the meantime, Jasper Ellens has offered a few insights into the camera capabilities of GoPro's long-awaited 360-degree action camera. For one, the leaker claims to have witnessed evidence of the Max 2 'leaving the Insta360 X5 in the dust' when it comes to video quality.
Not only that, but Ellens suggests it will be a two-horse race between the Max 2 and Osmo 360 once both officially arrive. For context, DJI is believed to have equipped the latter with a 1-inch CMOS sensor with 2.4 µm wide pixels. Allegedly this sensor also delivers a 120 MP native output; we would recommend exercising some scepticism over this value until more concrete evidence emerges. Regardless, for the Max 2 and Osmo 360 to offer comparable image quality, GoPro must have adopted a new camera sensor at the very least.
