Garmin has announced not just one, but two acquisitions. Both platforms bring athletes and fitness trainers together and are funded by paid subscriptions, so these acquisitions could signal an expansion of Garmin Connect+.

Garmin announced in a press release that the smartwatch manufacturer has acquired both TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic. With these acquisitions, Garmin aims to expand its fitness portfolio with platforms that bring athletes and coaches together and offer tailored solutions for both endurance and strength training to help users achieve their goals.

Garmin will take on more than 120 employees from TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, nor have Garmin’s future plans, so it remains unclear whether the platforms will continue to be available as independent services as they have been. In any case, these acquisitions are likely to further expand Garmin’s growing portfolio of paid subscriptions.

Since Garmin already offers, among other things, Garmin Connect+, Outdoor Maps+, Tacx Premium, the Garmin Golf Membership, Vault subscriptions for storing videos in the cloud, inReach satellite subscriptions, LTE subscriptions for dog trackers, and subscriptions for children’s smartwatches, specialized fitness subscriptions could soon follow. TrainingPeaks currently charges $134.99 per year for customized workout plans created by real trainers.

TrainHeroic offers a variety of workout courses that are primarily focused on strength training. Some courses cost up to $49 per month, but select courses are also available for a one-time payment. This pricing structure makes it unlikely that Garmin will integrate the new platforms into Connect+ at no additional cost.
