GPD has released a fix designed to address micro-stutters that some people have noticed on Win 4 units. To recap, the Win 4 does not ship with a landscape display, as GPD advertised. Instead, the gaming handheld uses an IC chip to convert a portrait display signal to a landscape one. While the workaround allows older Windows games to run without further modification, GPD's community determined the IC chip as the source of micro-stutters that we noticed when reviewing our unit in March.
Thankfully, GPD's fix does not require any soldering. However, it does call for a few parts, as well as the confidence to open the Win 4 yourself. In short, the fix flashes the IC chip's firmware; the firmware that the Win 4 ships with does not run at 60 Hz. Please note, you will need a CH341a programmer, Dupont cables and software to perform the fix, along with a laptop or a PC from which to push the new IC firmware. You can find full and updated details on the parts needed in a Google Doc that GPD Discord member e1000 has put together.
As The Phawx demonstrates in a video below, the fix may not work at the first attempt. With that said, it is improbable to cause any damage when flashing the new IC firmware. Apparently, moving the wires mid-flash will not brick the IC chip either. Please see e1000's Google Doc for more information and The Phawx's video for a visual demonstration of how to perform the fix.
