Some mini-PCs and compact notebooks feature APUs with impressive performance that are fundamentally capable of running games. However, depending on the game in question, they can only do so at lower frame rates or very reduced graphics settings. External graphics cards could be a solution for such systems in certain situations, such as at home. Meanwhile, the number of external graphics solutions has grown significantly, with GMKtec introducing yet another product into the fray.
The GMK AD-GP1 is an external GPU based on the AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT with 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. Unlike some graphics docks, the AD-GP1 isn’t a semi-modular solution and doesn’t allow users to replace the graphics card inside. On the flip side, the system can be carried around more easily due to its enclosed design. Furthermore, the unit isn’t too massive, with its chassis measuring a reasonable 163.9 x 110.5 x 39.9 mm (6.5 x 4.4 x 1.6 in).
The AD-GP1 can connect to a device via USB4 or OCuLink, with the latter offering higher transfer speeds thanks to its four PCIe 4.0 lanes. USB Power Delivery is likewise supported, enabling the eGPU to supply a compatible host device with up to 100 watts. For video output, the AD-GP1 offers two DisplayPort 2.0 and two HDMI 2.1 interfaces. GMKtec has yet to reveal any information on pricing and availability. Those looking for an external GPU may also want to consider the GPD G1, which we previously reviewed.
